Vanguard (25-12) dominated on the stat sheet, compiling an advantage in kills, blocks, hitting percentage, digs and assists.

But MBU (38-3) erased a 17-10 deficit in the third set and bounced back after the Lions turned a 9-5 deficit into a 10-10 deadlock in the decisive fifth set.

Senior libero Kelly Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had a season-high 32 digs, while senior Jessica Neves had 18 kills for the Lions.

Rachel Barker had 14 kills, while Charlotte Heerlyn added 13 to go with three block assists.

Stephanie Flores had nine kills, two solo blocks and three block assists, while setter Lauren Hayes compiled 34 assists, nine digs and four kills.

Vanguard advanced to the single-elimination championship bracket by topping Southern Oregon, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, in pool play on Thursday.

Heerlyn had 17 kills and hit .351 Thursday to help the Lions finish second in their four-team pool.

The win, which included 19 Heenan digs, avenged a three-set loss to Southern Oregon (24-7) in August.
