High School Football: Estancia dominates honors in Orange Coast League

Versatile Estancia High sophomore Dylan Laurent was named Orange Coast League MVP for leading the Eagles to their third undefeated league football title since 2010.

Laurent, who stood out at running back, wide receiver, cornerback and as a returner, is one of 11 Eagles to earn first-team laurels.

Junior quarterback Connor Brown was the Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Tyler Thomas shared the Defensive Player of the Year honor, senior Dorian Navarrete was the Lineman of the Year, and junior kicker Chris Moya shared the Special Teams Player of the Year award.

Representing Costa Mesa on the first team are junior all-purpose player Cameron Curet, senior lineman Adam JeyaRajah and junior Sammy Swanson.

Estancia senior linebacker Ronnie Urquiza, senior wide receiver Dalton O’Daly, sophomore linebacker Jeffrey Alai, senior defensive end Kevin Valencia, senior tailback Christian Laurent and junior offensive guard Juan Lozada made the first team.

The Eagles (8-3, 5-0 in league), who won their fourth league championship in eight seasons under Coach Mike Bargas, lost to Santiago, 13-9, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southern Division playoffs at Jim Scott Stadium.

Dylan Laurent, a repeat first-team selection, finished with 101 carries for 769 yards and 13 touchdowns. He had 22 catches for 389 yards and two touchdowns.

Laurent returned two punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns. He finished with 77 tackles and seven interceptions.

Brown, a two-time first-team member, completed 111 of 199 passes for 1,598 yards and 11 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions.

Thomas made 114 tackles, intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble and forced a fumble. He shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Saddleback’s Chris Rios.

Moya, who split the Special Teams Player of the Year with Saddleback’s Brian Salcido, converted six field-goal attempts.

Urquiza, who also made the first team last season, compiled 90 tackles and recovered two fumbles.

O’Daly caught 30 passes for 557 yards and five touchdowns.

Alai made 102 tackles, while Valencia had 66 tackles.

Christian Laurent rushed 166 times for 743 yards and three touchdowns.

Curet is a two-time first-team selection for the Mustangs (2-8, 2-3), who placed fourth in league. Curet, a running back and receiver, rushed 127 times for 937 yards and three touchdowns, while finishing with nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

As an outside linebacker, Curet had 92 tackles (40 solo), three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Swanson, who played linebacker on defense, completed 10 of 29 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown as a quarterback. He rushed 33 times for 100 yards.

The Orange Coast League does not select a second team.
