Sailors have three on first-team All-Sunset League

Newport Harbor High juniors Jessica Lynch, Kaela Whelan and Sarah Barker have all earned first-team All-Sunset League accolades for girls’ water polo.

The Sailors trio is joined on the first team by Huntington Beach senior Kali Hyham and junior Marina Hyham, as well as Edison senior Chloe Kunst and Marina senior Madeleine Camargo.

Lynch led Newport Harbor with 59 goals, adding 37 steals and 17 assists. The driver helped Newport Harbor (13-12) finished second place in league, at 4-1. The Sailors advanced to the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs before losing to rival Corona del Mar, 9-4.

Whelan, a driver, was third on the team with 35 goals and added 12 assists and 17 steals. Barker, a center, was second on Newport Harbor with 42 goals and also had 16 steals.

Kali Hyham, bound for Bucknell, led Huntington Beach with 67 goals scored. She also had 65 steals, a team-best, and was third on the team with 33 assists. She helped the Oilers (18-11) finish third in the league after two close losses to league champion Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor, and advance to the wild-card round of the Division 1 playoffs. There, the Oilers fell at Santa Barbara, 4-2.

Her sister Marina Hyham, the team’s goalie, made 289 saves. That ranked fourth in Orange County.

Kunst, bound for Mercyhurst, led Edison with her totals of 48 goals, 13 assists and 37 steals. The Chargers finished 4-16, but fourth in league with a 2-3 record.

Camargo, who will play at Cal State Monterey Bay, was second on Marina with 83 goals. She also had 27 assists and 55 steals for the Vikings (14-14, 1-4), who were fifth in the league.

Newport Harbor seniors Lissa Westerman and sophomores Karis Coach and Annie Rankin earned second-team all-league accolades, as did Huntington Beach seniors Lauren Smith and Ally Long and sophomore Courtney Heydorf.

Edison sophomores Jennifer Murphy and Isabella Sorensen also earned second-team accolades, as did Marina sophomore Shanna Zuanich and freshman Emma Marsh.

Fountain Valley senior Kylie Boland and juniors Alexis Perez, Ally Wilcox and Amanda Blake also earned second-team All-Sunset League honors. The Barons finished 5-15, 0-5 in league.

Bayley Weber of league champion Los Alamitos, a junior, earned Sunset League MVP honors.
