Ross, Gibb win respective AVP titles in New York

NEW YORK — Costa Mesa resident April Ross and Huntington Beach resident Jake Gibb earned women’s and men’s titles, respectively, at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals New York Open, completed Sunday.

Ross and partner Lauren Fendrick, the No. 2-seeds, defeated No. 5-seeded Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat 24-22, 21-15 in a 46-minute final to split $18,000.

Ross, a Newport Harbor High product, survived a dislocated big toe to rally for an 18-21, 21-15, 15-13 win in a 74-minute semifinal.

Gibb and partner Taylor Crabb, the No. 2 seeds, defeated No. 6-seeded Billy Allen and Stafford Slick 21-16, 25-23, in a 53-minute final. Gibb and Crabb split $18,000.

Gibb and Crabb topped qualifiers Ricardo Santos and Chaim Schalk 21-19, 21-16 in a 43-minute semifinal.

Costa Mesa resident Sara Hughes and partner Kelly Claes, the No. 13 seeds, finished tied for seventh to split $4,400 in the women’s event.

Also in the men’s event, former UC Irvine standout Ty Loomis and partner Marty Lorenz, as well as Newport Harbor alum Ty Tramblie and partner Avery Drost, finished ninth.

Also finishing ninth and splitting $3,000 was Huntington Beach resident Reid Pretty, who played with Maddison McKibbin.

The AVP Tour continues June 22-25 in Seattle.
