Costa Mesa can’t come through against Calvary Chapel again

Facing a winless Santa Ana Calvary Chapel team that was starting a freshman quarterback, the prospects of a victory seemed promising for the Costa Mesa High football team Friday night.

But for the fourth straight year, the host Mustangs couldn’t get past the Eagles, falling 21-7 in the Orange Coast League opener for both.

“It was an all-around effort that we really wanted,” Calvary Chapel coach Austin Smith said. “I really threw the kitchen sink for this game and really believed we had a chance. I wouldn’t trade our (0-5) start for anything because it only makes us better and ready for teams at this level.”

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first on a 24-yard passing touchdown by quarterback Cole Boop.

Calvary Chapel increased its lead in the second quarter when senior running back Daniel Nava ran for a six-yard touchdown.

Costa Mesa (3-3) would pull close after senior quarterback Ben Swanson connected with junior Brandon Gonzalez for a 15-yard score to make it a one possession game.

Right as the Eagles were looking to pad their lead before the half, Gonzalez picked off Boop to prevent any further damage.

After a scoreless third quarter, Boop would double Calvary Chapel’s lead on a two-yard rush with less than 10 minutes left in the game. The Eagles sealed the victory with an interception to run out the clock and snag a key victory on the road.

Calvary Chapel will travel to Estancia High next week while Costa Mesa will head on the road to face Laguna Beach.
