Costa Mesa loses to Godinez 38-3

In a football game between the top team from the Orange Coast League and the worst team, the better one easily won.

Godinez High defeated host Costa Mesa 38-3 on Friday night, clinching at least a share of the league title.

Godinez (6-3, 4-0 in league) can wrap up its second straight undefeated league championship with a win at Estancia (2-7, 2-2) next week.

The Grizzlies, who came in averaging 27 points per game, used a balanced attack against the Mustangs (3-6, 0-4).

Gerson Lopez finished with nine carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns. The senior scored on runs of 86 and 41 yards.

Patrick McMorris, a junior, rushed for two first-quarter touchdowns, and ended with 45 yards. He’s the younger brother of Malik McMorris, who plays at Cal.

Godinez, ranked No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Division 12 poll, also got contributions from Andy Sosa. He had a 19-yard touchdown run and a 32-yard field goal. Sosa ran for 65 yards and had 47 receiving yards.

“That’s what I want people to know. We do have weapons. It’s not just [McMorris],” Godinez first-year coach Tom Heathington said.

For the Mustangs, they were without starting quarterback Ben Swanson (knee). In addition, Costa Mesa second-string quarterback Jack Perez was also out with a knee injury, forcing it to turn to Ty Muir.

“I was nervous as [heck], but I’m just happy I got to play with my team,” Muir said. “It was a great learning experience.”

Costa Mesa’s offense didn’t get a first down until the 10:11 mark of the third quarter. In that quarter, one of Muir’s passes was deflected and intercepted in the end zone.

The Mustangs ended the Grizzlies’ shutout bid in the fourth quarter. Midway through the fourth, Costa Mesa had to punt, but the ball was fumbled by the Grizzlies and the Mustangs took over on the Grizzlies’ 18-yard line.

The Mustangs had to settle for a field goal, after getting the ball as close as the four. Wally Olmedo converted a 21-yard field goal, giving the Mustangs their only points of the game.

Costa Mesa closes out the season next week with Saddleback (1-7, 0-4) at Segerstrom High. The winner will avoid finishing last in league.
