A few hours before graduating from Corona del Mar High on Thursday, Jasie Dunk played in her final Southern California Junior Sectionals tennis match.

Dunk had her chances against No. 9-seeded Jennifer Richards of San Diego. In the end, however, it was Richards who came through with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win in the girls’ 18 singles round of 32 match at Los Caballeros Sports & Racquet Club.

The more consistent game of Richards frustrated Dunk, who still had many chances. In the first set, Dunk earned seven break point chances, but could convert none of them.

Dunk said she came out a bit nervous, as she said the last time she played against Richards was “a nasty match,” complete with Dunk getting into it with Richards’ mother.

On Thursday, Dunk managed to hold serve just once in the entire match.

“It’s hard for me to play against girls like that,” Dunk said. “I like faster points, and finishing off the points with big shots. It’s hard for me to do that when she’s pushing me around the court and not making an error. I could have been more consistent. I just got impatient, I think.”

The second set was even more strange, as neither player could hold serve for the duration of the set. Dunk broke Richards’ serve six times, and Richards returned the favor.

But Richards won five of the last six points of the tiebreaker to win the match, advancing to play Dominique Stone of North Hollywood in the round of 16 on Friday.

“I just could not get my first serve in, and she has a good return,” Dunk said. “She does not give me any free points. With my serve off, I had to just throw it in most of the time. I had to really work for every single point … and I just couldn’t finish off my service games, but neither could she. That just exemplifies how choppy the match was.”

Dunk, who will play next year at Cal, plans to stay home for the rest of the summer to work on her game. She will be headed to Berkeley in mid-August, she said.

She had a sparkling four-year varsity career at CdM. As a senior, she was the Pacific Coast League singles champion and had a 40-3 record in singles.

“It’s scary to think that I’m graduating high school,” she said. “But I’m super-excited for my next chapter.”
