Estancia football has no defense for Calvary Chapel’s aerial attack, loses on Homecoming

A big first half put Santa Ana Calvary Chapel in the win column Friday night with a 26-17 Orange Coast League win over host Estancia High on its Homecoming night at Jim Scott Stadium.

It was Estancia’s running game versus Calvary Chapel’s passing game. But unfortunately for Estancia (1-6, 1-1 in league), Calvary Chapel (2-5, 2-0) had a running game as well. And Estancia coach Mike Bargas took notice.

“We did not start cranking until the third quarter,” Bargas said. “We ended up stuttering a little bit. We didn’t have a passing game. So in order to have a run game you have to have a little bit of a passing game to go along with it. And we were not connecting our passes.”

After scoring an unanswered touchdown in the third quarter to bring itself within 20-17, Estancia gained momentum going into the fourth quarter.

But that momentum waned as Estancia running back Trevor Pacheco fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line and Calvary Chapel recovered.

Two drives later Calvary Chapel put the final nail in the coffin with a 14 play, 85-yard drive that ended with a fourth-and-goal, 3-yard passing touchdown from Calvary Chapel quarterback Cole Boop to receiver Noah Bustillos with 58 seconds left to play in the game.

Boop led his offense with 333 passing yards and and 38 rushing yards to round out his stat line. Calvary Chapel running back Daniel Nava led his team in rushing and receiving with 45 and 173, respectively.

Despite the fumble in the fourth quarter, Estancia’s Pacheco looked unstoppable. Pacheco led the game with 201 rushing yards, 117 of those yards coming in the first half.

Calvary Chapel coach Austin James Smith credited his players’ teamwork for Friday’s win.

“Football is football,” Smith said. “Whether you are a split-back-rear team or love to throw the football like we do, it’s about execution. Regardless of scheme, we out-executed (Estancia) tonight and all the glory and praise goes to the players.”
