Fountain Valley kicks off football season with 38-2 win over Troy

Transfer quarterback Nick Welch helped Fountain Valley match last season’s win total by opening this year with a 38-2 victory against host Troy at La Habra High on Saturday night.

Welch, who played at Huntington Beach a year ago, completed 14 of 20 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns. The senior also rushed 11 times for 102 yards.

Welch’s longest touchdown went to Adam Arganda for 75 yards, allowing the Barons to take a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Kishaun Sykes had three carries for 24 yards and a touchdown and one catch for 48 yards.

Fountain Valley’s home opener is with South Torrance at 7 p.m. Thursday at Huntington Beach’s Cap Sheue Field.
