High School Roundup: NHHS doubles team Lee and Schaefer wins Sunset League title

Newport Harbor High’s David Lee and Mark Schaefer were crowned the Sunset League doubles champions on Thursday.

The Sailors duo took down the No. 2-seeded team from Los Alamitos, 6-0, 2-6, 10-5 in the finals. They also beat the No. 4-seeded team from the Griffins, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Newport Harbor singles standout Max McKennon fell in the league title match to Ethan Kolsky of Los Al, 3-6, 6-3, 7-10. McKennon beat Los Al’s Naara Shin in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-4.

Newport Harbor’s David Sharp and Andy Myers finished third in doubles.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 13, Marina 3

Hagen Danner had three hits and six runs batted in during the Oilers’ Sunset League game at home on Thursday.

Huntington Beach (24-3, 12- in league), ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, plays San Jose Bellarmine Prep in the Boras Classic championship at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday at noon.

Dylan Holt had two hits for Marina, which dropped to 6-7 in league.
