High School Roundup: Bruening’s double-double propels CdM girls’ basketball to second win

Junior center Tatiana Bruening had 24 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Corona del Mar High girls’ basketball team to a 56-34 win over El Cajon Foothills Christian in the Prep Blue Division of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic at Mt. Miguel High on Thursday.

Junior guard Samantha Uehara added 13 points for CdM.

The Sea Kings (2-11) take on host Santee Santana in the tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Edison 47, Cypress 40: Senior center Ashley Niemand had a team-high 18 points with 15 rebounds to lead the Chargers past the Centurions in the Larry Doyle/Dan Wiley Orange County Tournament of Champions at Marina High on Thursday.

Senior guard Hope Nguyen added 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Edison (7-6) plays the winner of Tustin versus Oxford Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Marina High.

Huntington Beach 57, El Modena 29: Sophomore guard Marisa Tanga had 25 points with seven three-pointers, as the Oilers beat the Vanguards in the Garden Grove Tournament on Thursday.

Freshman shooting guard Meghan McIntyre had 12 points, and freshman point guard Alyssa Real chipped in with 10 points.

Huntington Beach (7-5) plays Whittier La Serna at 3 p.m. on Friday as the tournament continues.

San Diego Rancho Bernardo 68, Sage Hill 54: Senior shooting guard Kate Knollenberg paced the Lightning again with 20 points in her team’s NAIA Division game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic at Del Norte High on Thursday.

Freshman power forward Emily Elliott added 13 points, and senior small forward Kenna Knollenberg had 11 points.

Sage Hill (6-5) continues tournament play against host Lakeside El Capitan at 8 p.m. on Friday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 53, San Juan Hills 45: Blake Burzell had 16 points for the Breakers in the San Diego Torrey Pines tournament game Thursday night.

Nolan Naess had 13 points, and Adam Armstrong added 10 for Laguna Beach (13-2), which is off to its best start in its 84-year program history.

The Breakers play St. Augustine Prep of New Jersey in a Governor’s Division tournament semifinal game at 7 p.m. Friday at Carlsbad High.

Estancia 65, Santa Ana Valley 24: The Eagles improved to 10-3 with the Coast Classic tournament win Thursday.

Century Elks Holiday Classic

Newport Harbor’s tournament semifinal against Westminster on Thursday night was postponed a day due to a gas leak, Sailors assistant coach Jason Carey said.

The semifinal game was rescheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. If the Sailors win, they’ll play in Saturday’s title game at 7:30 p.m. against either Segerstrom or Pacifica. The third-place game is at 6 p.m. Saturday. All games are at Century High.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Estancia 1, Valencia of Placentia 1 (Estancia wins 6-5 on penalty kicks): Nicolas Ramirez had the goal in regulation for the Eagles on Thursday in the North Orange County Classic tournament game.

Aaron Neri, Charly Segura, Luis Milán, Marcos Arreola, and Gerardo Leon Camberos had penalty-kick goals for Estancia (7-1-2).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 2, Long Beach Wilson 0: Two freshmen, Reese Bodas and Alyssa Sims, scored their first career goals for the Sailors in Thursday’s North Orange County Classic finale.

The Sailors (7-4-2) open Sunset League play Tuesday at Los Alamitos at 5 p.m.

Edison 1, Temecula Valley 0: The Chargers advanced to the Excalibur Tournament of Champions “Guinevere” bracket final with the win Thursday at SilverLakes Sports Complex in Norco.

Edison will play Beckman for the Guinevere (third in pool) title game Friday at 11 a.m. at SilverLakes.
