High School Roundup: Huntington Beach girls’ basketball rolls to fifth straight win

Huntington Beach High’s girls’ basketball team used a balanced attack to knock off Santa Margarita 40-27 in the Matt Denning Classic at Mater Dei High on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Marisa Tanga had a team-high 14 points. Freshman shooting guard Meghan McIntyre added 12 points and three steals, while freshman point guard Alyssa Real scored nine points with four assists.

Oilers coach Russell McClurg said that Daniella Benabou was the player of the game, despite not having a big scoring performance. The junior center contributed six rebounds, six blocked shots and three steals.

“She dominated their big girl on defense,” McClurg said of Benabou.

Huntington Beach made eight three-pointers as a team.

The Oilers (11-5) will host Marina (4-12) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday as Sunset League play resumes.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Glendora St. Lucy’s 15, Ocean View 5: The Seahawks fell to 3-6 after dropping the nonleague game Saturday at Ocean View High.

Ocean View opens Golden West League play Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. at Segerstrom.
