High school roundup: Estancia boys’ soccer stays unbeaten in league

Senior Andy Martinez was one of four players scoring for the Estancia High boys’ soccer team, which improved to 5-0-3 in the Orange Coast League by shutting out visiting Calvary Chapel 5-0 on Friday.

Miguel Pena, Andres Milan, Nicolas Ramirez and Sergio Gutierrez had a goal for the Eagles, who are 12-3-5 overall and ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll. Estancia has blanked four of its last five opponents.

Estancia, which has 18 points, can clinch at least a share of its first league title since the 2009-10 season with a tie at home against Laguna Beach on Tuesday. The game starts at 5 p.m. A win gives the Eagles the outright crown.

If the Eagles lose, they can still win the title outright with a Costa Mesa loss.

Laguna Beach 0, Costa Mesa 0: The host Mustangs stayed in second place at 4-2-2 on Friday, while the Breakers are fourth at 3-2-3.

Costa Mesa plays Godinez at Centennial Regional Park on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 7, Foothill 6: Sophia Lucas, Alex Peros and Evan Tingler each scored two goals on Friday, helping the visiting Breakers advance to the Irvine Southern California Championships semifinals.

Nicole Struss added a goal for Laguna Beach, and Thea Walsh made nine saves. Tingler led the Breakers with three steals.

The No. 3-seeded Breakers (18-1) play No. 2 Mater Dei in a semifinal game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.

Newport Harbor 9, Agoura 7: The Sailors won a consolation game of the Irvine Southern California Championships on Friday at Corona del Mar High.

Newport Harbor (12-8) plays Coronado in a tournament ninth-place semifinal Saturday at 11 a.m. at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Estancia 68, Calvary Chapel 32: Senior Matt Sullivan had 13 points for Estancia in Friday’s Orange Coast League game at home.

Estancia improved to 16-8 overall and 5-3 in league, good for third place.

Estancia, ranked No. 15 in CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA, hosts Laguna Beach (23-3, 8-0 in league), No. 3 in Division 3AA, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Rolling Hills Prep 70, Corona del Mar 54: Senior guard Kevin Kobrine finished with 19 points and John Humphreys added 15 for the Sea Kings in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High on Friday.

CdM (15-10) returns to Pacific Coast League action when it hosts Woodbridge on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 38, St. Margaret’s 22: Freshman center Emily Elliott had 19 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead the visiting Lightning in an Academy League game on Friday.

Senior forward Kenna Knollenberg added 13 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Sophomore guard Joyce Jogwe had four points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

Sage Hill coach Kerwin Walters said that junior forward Nadia Akbari and senior guard Kate Knollenberg remained out with the flu.

Walters added that sophomore point guard Trinity Cha suffered a concussion in Wednesday’s game against Brethren Christian. Sage Hill (16-8, 9-2 in league), which is in second place in league, is hopeful to have Cha back at some point during the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 45, Liberty Christian 8: Freshman Anna Eddy had 18 points to lead the host Tritons (5-8, 2-6) in Friday’s Express League game.

Senior Karen Munoz and freshman Hailey McKay each added 10 points for Pacifica Christian (5-8, 2-6 in league).

The Minutemen dropped to 0-11 overall and 0-8 in league.

The Tritons are at first-place Samueli Academy (8-12, 8-0) on Monday at 5 p.m.
