High school roundup: Lefties have right stuff for Huntington Beach baseball

Left-handers Dylan Ramirez, Nate Madole and Nick Morlett combined to throw a one-hitter in the Huntington Beach High baseball team’s 1-0 nonleague win over Orange Lutheran at Hart Park in Orange on Wednesday.

Ramirez, a junior, started, and he struck out seven and walked one in five hitless innings.

Madole had a strikeout and walk, while not allowing a hit in the sixth. Morlett, who gave up the first hit to the Lancers in the seventh, earned the save.

The Oilers scored the game’s lone run in the top of the second inning, when Jake Vogel stole home.

Ramirez, Nick Lopez, Justin Brodt and Cole Minato each had a hit for Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach (1-2) hosts La Verne Damien on Thursday at 3 p.m., when it opens play in the Frank Lerner Division of the Newport Elks Tournament.

Fountain Valley 4, La Habra 1: Junior Jackson Ouellette struck out six in five shutout innings, helping the host Barons win their first game of the season on Wednesday.

Fountain Valley (1-2) plays at El Dorado in the Loara Tournament on Friday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 16, San Clemente 2: Kyle Pham and Diego Fernandez del Valle each swept in singles for the Sea Kings on Wednesday in a nonleague season opener at home.

Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sea Kings, who host Marina in another nonleague match Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor 11, Aliso Niguel 7: Josh Watkins swept at No. 2 singles for the host Sailors in Wednesday’s nonleague match.

Damion Moreno won once in singles and Ace Thayer and Julian Hernandez won twice at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor (2-0), which is at home against Bolsa Grande on Thursday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 16, El Dorado 2: Rhett Farmer scored six goals for the Sailors in Wednesday’s nonleague game at home.

Zach Quinonez had three goals, and Bennett Cox and Hunter Rouch scored twice for Newport Harbor (1-1). Race Mooers, Joe Fuller and Hutton Wooters added one goal each, and Garrett Rovazzini made two saves.

The Sailors host Mater Dei on Friday at 7 p.m.

Edison 7, El Toro 5: Visiting Edison won its nonleague season opener Wednesday.

Edison plays at Dana Hills on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Corona del Mar 10, La Quinta 10 (eight innings): Freshman Trasara Alexander had two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Sea Kings (2-0-1) in Wednesday’s nonleague road game.

The game was called after one extra inning due to darkness.

CdM rallied from an 8-6 deficit in the seventh inning. Amerys Barshtak led off with a single. Alexander doubled off the wall to score Barshtak. Sapphire Angely-Veron then singled in Alexander to tie it up.

Barshtak had three hits and scored three runs.

Godinez 13, Ocean View 3: Po Russ, Ari Hencke and Nivea Armenta collected hits for the visiting Seahawks (1-2) in Wednesday’s nonleague game.

Capistrano Valley Christian 10, Brethren Christian 6: The Warriors fell in their season opener on the road Wednesday.

Brethren Christian is at Bolsa Grande (0-1) for a 3:15 p.m. game on Thursday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 188, Villa Park 218: Junior Tony DiBernardo earned medalist honors with an even-par 35 performance in the Chargers’ nonleague match at Green River Golf Club in Corona on Wednesday.

Pete DiBernardo finished with a 36, followed by John Oatis (38), and Tiger Tahvildari (39).

Edison hosts St. Margaret’s at SeaCliff Country Club on Thursday.

Newport Harbor 212, Trabuco Hills 224: Junior Ethan Barnes was the individual medalist after shooting a 38 for the Sailors in a nonleague match at Dove Canyon Golf Club in Trabuco Canyon on Wednesday.

Billy Shannon shot a 41 for Newport Harbor, Campbell Norris and Ted Terry each had 44s, and Sam Thayer had a 45.

Costa Mesa 229, Tustin 232: Mustangs senior Jimmy Solano finished with a seven-over-par 42 in Wednesday’s nonleague match on the Mesa Linda Course at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Blake Juncker carded a 43 for Costa Mesa, while Huy Ngo had a 46. Cooper Crandall and Josh Gough recorded 49s.
