Several local athletes are scheduled to compete in the second annual Queen of the Beach Invitational volleyball tournament, Saturday and Sunday near the Hermosa Beach Pier.

Recent Laguna Beach High graduate Kendyl Brennan, as well as current Breakers Lexi McKeown and Peri Brennan are among 64 high school players taking part in the event founded by Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana.

Other locals listed among the entrants are Hannah Phair and Lindsey Sparks (Edison High), Ashley Stevens (Huntington Beach High), and Huntington Beach resident Morgan Kendrick (Rosary).

Kendyl Brennan is committed to continue her volleyball career at Tulane, while McKeown, the Orange Coast League MVP as a junior last fall, is committed to Florida State.

Peri Brennan will be a sophomore at Laguna Beach next fall.

Phair, a recent graduate, has committed to UCLA, while Sparks, who will be a senior in the fall, has committed to Pepperdine.

Kendrick has committed to Saint Mary’s.

Invited players will compete in the showcase event with different partners and a single player will be crowned Queen of the Beach.

A group of 32 college players will also compete for the Queen of the Beach title.

Players will be placed in pools of four players, based on USA Volleyball rankings and advice from their coaches.

All players will play no fewer than six games, with each contest being a single game with rally scoring to 21 points. Teams must win by two points. The top two from each pool will advance, based on won-loss record and point differential, to a second set of four-player pools. The process continues until the four players contest a final bracket.

The bottom two girls in each pool will move to a consolation bracket.
