Williams, Fischer help USA women strike gold at World University Games

Edison High graduate Alys Williams scored a goal in the final as the U.S. women’s national water polo team beat Hungary, 16-9, to win the World University Games gold medal on Tuesday in Taipai, Taiwan.

Williams, who finished her senior year at UCLA last spring, scored in the second quarter to help Team USA earn a 10-3 halftime lead.

Laguna Beach High graduate Aria Fischer, who is headed to Stanford, also contributed for Team USA. The team went 8-0 in the tournament, including a 13-8 semifinal win over Japan and a 13-7 quarterfinal win against Canada. Williams scored twice in the victory against Japan, while Fischer and Williams both scored twice in the Canada game.

Team USA also beat France, Argentina, Australia, Italy and Greece on the way to the title.

Sisters Kiley and Jamie Neushul each scored four goals in the title game victory over Hungary, and Gabby Stone made five saves.

In men’s action, Team USA topped Canada, 18-8, on Tuesday in the ninth-place game. Laguna Beach alumnus Nolan McConnell scored a goal in the win and Chris Whitelegge, a Newport Harbor product, made six saves in goal.
