Herin stands out in Sage Hill setback
IRVINE – Hannah Herin is the future of Sage Hill School girls’ lacrosse. And her present isn’t bad either.
The sophomore attacker had two goals to share high-scoring honors for the Lightning in an 18-4 nonleague loss at University High on Friday.
Herin, whose speed and aggressiveness helped her consistently win possession for the Lightning, is clearly the most athletically skilled player on the Sage Hill roster.
Sage Hill senior goalie Vale Lewis also earned praise from Bridget Hill, Sage’s assistant coach who was filling in for head coach Emily Bielen.
“Hannah is amazing,” said Hill, who noted that Bielen was out of town on business. “She leads by example and she obviously has a lot of great skills, so she does a lot of work for us.”
Lewis made 15 saves against a 38-shot barrage by the Trojans, who posted a 24-2 shot advantage after securing a 7-2 halftime lead.
“I thought [Lewis] was fantastic,” Hill said. “I was so impressed with her. She just sticks in there and plays amazing.”
Junior Elizabeth Kline also had two goals for Sage Hill (3-6), a freelance program that was coming off a 12-11 triumph over Rosary.
The Lightning, which in 10 seasons has never surpassed five wins and has not yet posted a winning record, has defeated Rosary twice this season. Sage’s other win came against first-year program Segerstrom.
“We have a lot of new players,” said Hill, who praised the effort put forth by her squad.
Junior Nataly Shayansmith had the lone assist for Sage Hill, which had nine of its 11 shots in the opening 25-minute half. She also was aggressive attacking on offense before halftime.
Sophomore midfielder Cammi Phillips also showed determined play for the Lightning.
University (9-3) won its fourth straight game in dominant fashion.
The Trojans received five goals from Ashlyn Wang and four more from Honia Mohtashami. Eight players scored for the hosts.
