Following an exciting Governor’s Cup, there remains wind left in the sails of some of the world’s top youth skippers.

Their next competition began on Tuesday and concludes on Saturday in the Youth Worlds Match Racing Championships.

Two of the first three champions to be crowned in the event were from Australia – Sam Gilmour (2015) and Will Dargaville (2016) – with a third Aussie entering the Youth Match Racing Worlds as the odds-on favorite.

Australia’s Harry Price was the runner-up in 2016. He won the Governor’s Cup in 2015, a competition that has been hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club since 1967.

Not insignificant to Price’s quest to finish atop the field this year, the Youth Match Racing Worlds are being contested out of Balboa Yacht Club this week.

A local team is in the fight after gaining experience in the Governor’s Cup. The trio is Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Charlie Welsh, John Horton and Robert Garrett.

Early results had Welsh’s boat taking three wins against two losses in round-robin action on Tuesday. The wins were against Felix Jacobsen of Denmark, Cyril Fortin of France and Mathieu Cadei of Switzerland.

The losses were to Ettore Botticini of Italy and Matt Whitfield of Great Britain.

New Zealand’s George Anyon, Botticini and Price all finished the day undefeated in their first five races.
