Vikings’ Lewis taken by Oakland
Marina High third baseman Chad Lewis was selected by the Oakland A’s in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday. He was the 125th overall pick. During his senior year, Lewis hit .395 and had four home runs and 24 runs batted in.
Kennedy 11th in pole vault at State meet
Marina senior Jeremy Kennedy finished tied for 11th in the boys’ pole vault Saturday at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis. Kennedy cleared 14 feet 3. At Friday’s prelims, Kennedy cleared 15-3 and Huntington Beach senior Michael Loschiavo jumped 14-9 but didn’t qualify for the final. Mater Dei senior Scott Cook won the event at 16-3.
Romero wins men’s bodyboard title
Jacob Romero of Maui won the men’s title Sunday at the U.S. Open of Bodyboarding at the Huntington Beach Pier. Karla Costa Taylor captured the women’s title.
Marshall named new Marina baseball coach
Marina High announced Tuesday the hiring of Bob Marshall as its new baseball coach. Marshall takes over for Paul Renfrow, who guided the program to great success in the last 27 years. Marshall has been a member of Renfrow’s coaching staff the past 16 years, which includes a three-year stint as junior varsity coach. He was a member of the Marina staff when the Vikings won the 2003 CIF Division I championship.
Renfrow, a 1967 graduate of Marina, is retiring at the end of the school year. He won 420 games and two CIF Southern Section titles during his 27 years.
