Slammers send three teams to semifinals
BERNALILLO, N.M. — The Newport Beach-based Slammers FC sent three teams to the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Championships in Bernalillo, N.M.
Each team qualified for the semifinals in their respective division. The under-19 girls’, under-16 boys’ and under-16 girls’ teams play today.
The U19 girls shut out SC Del Sol 91 Maxwell, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. The Slammers play the Alameda SC Flash in the semifinals.
The U16 boys beat Idaho’s Boise National, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and advanced to face play WSM Premier in the semis.
The U16 girls defeated the Mustang Rampage, 2-1. The Slammers meet the Legends FC for a chance at the final on Sunday.

UCI’s Jock qualifies for 800-meter final
DES MOINES, Iowa — UC Irvine’s Charles Jock finished third in his 800-meter semifinal heat Friday at the USA Track & Field Championships to qualify for Sunday’s final at the Drake University Stadium.
Jock, a 2010 All-American and Big West Athlete of the Year in men’s track, crossed the line in 1 minute, 46.40 seconds. His time was the fifth-fastest of the 16 competitors in the two semifinal heats as he was the top collegiate finisher.
Duane Solomon from Saucony won Jock’s heat in 1:45.23 (fastest overall) and Nick Symmonds from Oregon TC-Nike was second in 1:45.91. The top three finishers in each heat plus the next two fastest times qualified for Sunday’s final, which is scheduled for noon (Pacific Time).

Chin falls; U.S. leads
John Chin, a 2010 All-American at UC Irvine, was defeated, two and one, in his singels match Friday at the Palmer Cup international team golf competition at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
Chin will face Team Europe’s Patrick Spraggs in a singles match today.
The United States leads the event, 9-7, and needs 3.5 points to win the Cup on European soil for the first time since 2002.
