Di Giulio reaches 14s final

Austin Di Giulio, an unseeded 10-year-old, reached the final in the boys’ 14 singles division at the 18th annual Costa Mesa Summer Junior Classic after recording victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals Thursday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Di Giulio, a Newport Beach resident, beat Alex Tran, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarters in the morning and then defeated Joshua Ortlip, 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinals in the afternoon.

Di Giulio, the No. 9-ranked player in Southern California in the boys’ 10s by the United States Tennis Assn., plays against Harrison Scott for the title today at 9 a.m. Just like Di Giulio, Scott went into the tournament unseeded.

Di Giulio didn’t reach the boys’ 14 doubles championship match. He and his partner, Adam Langevin, lost to the top-seeded team of Diego Bennett and Tyler Bloom, 6-4, 6-0.

Langevin, 12, is also a Newport Beach resident.

In girls’ 16 singles, No. 8 seed Morgan McVey of Newport Beach lost in the semifinals to fourth-seeded Naomi Bharath, 6-1, 6-3.

In boys’ 16 boys singles, No. 2 seed James Zillman of Costa Mesa defeated Ryan Mariano, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Zillman lost to Ho Ming Lau, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, in the semifinals.
