Pavlik to take part in UCI alumni game

The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team hosts an Alumni Match and Coach’s Chat on Saturday at Crawford Court. The alumni match is at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a preview of the 2010 season by Coach Paula Weishoff.

Laguna Beach native Whitney Pavlik is among the alumni scheduled to participate in the match, along with Kelly Wing, Devon Sutherland, Amanda Vazquez, Trisha White Marx, Stacey Mitchell Hyde, Lauren Souto and McCall Miller.

Pavlik was first-team all-conference selection at outside hitter during. She set the school record for hitting percentage in a single match during her senior year and recorded the third-best hitting percentage in a season. Saturday’s event is free and open to the public.

Lopes rides to win at Whistler

Laguna Beach resident Brian Lopes earned his fifth straight Crankworx Air DH win last weekend at Whistler Mountain Bike Park in British Columbia, Canada. Lopes turned in the fastest time of the day, 4 minutes 15.69 seconds, in an event that drew 381 competitors.

Lopes beat out second-place Samuel Blenkinsop (4:16.17) of New Zealand, third-place Gee Atherton (4:18.48) of Great Britian, fourth-place Bryn Atkinson (4:19.02) of Australia and fifth-place Fabien Cousini (4:19.28) of France.

“I knew I had to get on the pedals today,” said Lopes, whose time bettered his 2009 time at the event by five seconds . “It was super rough in the middle, but I knew I had to put together a good run.
