Loomis captures crown

Former UC Irvine standout Ty Loomis and partner Casey Patterson won their fourth Corona Light Wide Open men’s beach volleyball title Sunday, defeating Colin Kaslow and Tim Wooliver, 15-7, in the final of the event at Jenkinson’s Inlet in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.

Loomis and Patterson are undefeated on the Corona Light Wide Open Tour.

Former Newport Harbor High star Jeannette Hecker, a Newport Beach resident, teamed with Niles Dauber of Chicago to win the Coed Open division in the same event.

UCI pair contributes

UC Irvine redshirt freshman Scott Kevorken and incoming freshman Jeremy Dejno helped the United States men’s junior national team win the NORCECA Continental Championship in the under-21 division Saturday in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

Team USA defeated Canada, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16, in the championship match to finish the tournament 5-0.

The Americans qualified for the 2011 Federation Internationale de Volleyball Junior World Championships in Brazil.

The United States has medaled in every NORCECA men’s junior continental championship since the bi-annual event began in 1998, but had never won gold.

Mesa alumni match

The Costa Mesa High girls’ volleyball program has scheduled an alumni match Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. in the school’s main gym.

First-year coach Jeff Weihert will guide the current Mustangs against former players.
