Memorial Cup Invitational

SAN JOSE — Newport Harbor High finished second in the 16-team tournament after losing to Mater Dei, 9-6, in the title match at Bellarmine Prep Saturday.

The Sailors (20-4) beat Long Beach Wilson, 11-6, in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Mater Dei includes Newport Beach residents Patch O’Brien, Anthony Daboub, James Walters and Peter Russell.

SAN JOSE — Chase Watson scored five goals to lead Corona del Mar High to a third-place finish after a 13-9 win over Long Beach Wilson at Bellarmine Prep Saturday.

Evan Ramsey, Will Havercroft and Nick Treadaway had two goals, while Bruce Bearer had seven saves for the Sea Kings (16-8).

Ben Zepfel scored four goals in CdM’s 11-8 loss to Mater Dei in a semifinal earlier in the day. Bearer had 10 saves and one steal in the loss.

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Newport Harbor High boys finished third at league finals Saturday at Central Park, advancing to the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries in two weeks.

Marina won the league with 25 points. The Sailors finished with 76 points, tied with Edison, but the Chargers took second place due to a better sixth-man finish.

The top three teams on the three-mile course advanced to CIF. Fountain Valley finished in fourth place with 78 points.

Austin Little finished fourth in 15 minutes, 42 seconds for Newport Harbor, and Jake Barber was fifth in 15:43. Also scoring for the Sailors were Alex Jolly (11th, 16:23), Aaron Fleming (21st, 16:54) and Spencer Lindsay (35th, 17:31).

The Division II preliminaries are Nov. 13 at Mt. San Antonio College.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sunset League Finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High finished fifth at Central Park Saturday.

Paige Tennison led the way for the Sailors, finishing 17th in 19 minutes, 20 seconds.

Maggie Goodson (21st) and Caitlin Mead (22nd) both finished in 19:31.

Tori Sarris was 24th in 19:40 and Ashley Ima was 31st in 20:20.

Los Alamitos won the meet with 40 points, Fountain Valley (57 points) was second, Edison (62) was third and Marina (85) was fourth.

Newport Harbor had 115 points.
