OCC advances to semis

IRVINE — The Orange Coast women’s basketball team is seeking another tournament championship.

The Pirates (8-2), who won the Cuesta Tournament Saturday, advanced to the semifinals of the Irvine Valley Tournament Thursday when they beat Grossmont, 70-53.

Alyssa Hanson led OCC with 14 points. Samantha Hansen had 13 points and nine rebounds, Sami Little added 12 points and Amanda Deal scored 10 points for the Pirates, who is ranked No. 10 in Southern California and No. 17 in the state.

Ariel Meek and Cheslea Maurer scored 10 points each to lead Grossmont (6-5), which outrebounded OCC, 45-34.

But the Pirates caused the Griffins to commit 25 turnovers.

OCC also hit 22 of its 36 free-throw attempts, while Grossmont was 13 for 18 from the foul line.

The Pirates will meet Chaffey today at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.

Chaffey, ranked No. 9 in Southern California and No. 13 in the state, beat San Diego City, 71-53, Thursday.
