Joyner earns top league honor

Estancia High senior Davon Joyner shared the Orange Coast League MVP award in boys’ basketball after leading the Eagles to a runner-up finish in league for the second straight season and to the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA playoffs.

Joyner averaged a team-best 16.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Joyner, who is a repeat first-team selection, split the league’s top honor with Laguna Beach’s Tyler Masukawa.

The Eagles (16-12, 7-3 in league) lost to Palos Verdes, 52-42, in the first round of the playoffs.

Estancia senior guard Ray Holmes and Costa Mesa senior center Andrew Albers each made the first team.

Holmes averaged 11.5 points and led the Eagles with 34 three-pointers made.

Albers helped Costa Mesa (11-16, 5-5) reach the postseason for the second time in three seasons. The 6-8, 285-pounder averaged 12.1 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.2 rebounds and one steal per game. The Mustangs placed third in league.

Estancia junior center Rashad Davis and Costa Mesa junior guard Jordan Walden were named to the second team.

Caldwell honored

Newport Harbor High senior Cody Caldwell received first-team All-Sunset League honors in boys’ basketball.

Caldwell averaged 18.1 points and 7.3 rebounds for the Sailors (9-17, 1-9 in league). Newport Harbor finished in last place in league.

Edison’s Dylan Garrity and Los Alamitos’ Camryn Crocker shared the Sunset League MVP award.
