Sharing the wealth

At the end of a 2010-11 boys’ basketball season that saw him set three school career records and help guide Edison to a share of its first Sunset League championship in six years, Dylan Garrity has been named co-Most Valuable Player of the Sunset League boys’ all-league basketball team.

The senior guard shares the honor with another senior guard, Camryn Crocker of Los Alamitos, which shared the league title with the Chargers.

Garrity set a school record for career points (1,729), assists (438) and broke his own school record of games played with 114.

“Dylan was a no doubt MVP of the Sunset League,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said. “Without him, we do not accomplish half of what we did. He should be a first-team all-county selection.”

The All-Sunset League first team included senior center Zach Bauer and junior guard Dreon Barlett of Edison and Marina junior guard JJ James. Senior forward Henry Igboke of Los Alamitos and senior forward Cody Caldwell of Newport Harbor complete the team.

The seven-member second team included six local players: senior guard Jordan Reise, senior guard Dirk Cason and sophomore guard Andrew Tenbrink of Huntington Beach, and senior forward/center Zach Matar, junior guard Sean Myers and senior guard Judd Chamaa of Fountain Valley. Los Alamitos junior forward Ryan Hurst also made the team.

The 2011 Sunset League all-girls’ all-league basketball team also was headed by Edison players, sisters Bonnie and Karlie Samuelson, who shared the league MVP award. Bonnie, a senior forward who next year will play at Stanford, and Karlie, a sophomore guard, helped lead Edison to the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA championship two weeks ago. It was the program’s first title since 1987 and second overall.

Senior guard Christina Marquette and junior wing Rilee Horton of Edison, junior guard Maya Kennedy and junior point guard Kelsey Minato of Huntington Beach, and senior guard Alyssa Kinoshita and senior center Sloan Turner of Marina all made first team. Los Alamitos senior guard Lynne Higashigawa and Newport Harbor junior center Kasey Thompson also made the team.

The second team was featured junior post Monay Lee and sophomore guard Geena Gomez of Edison, senior center Sasha Mancisidor and sophomore wing Jill Nakaso of Huntington Beach, sophomore guard Lauren Dorame of Marina, senior center Leslie La of Fountain Valley, junior center Haley Gorman of Los Alamitos and senior center Alex Morton of Newport Harbor.

Senior guard Billy Keller, who overcame an early-season injury to help lead Ocean View to a piece another Golden West League boys’ title, has been named tri-MVP of the league, along with Segerstrom senior guard/forward Dathon Spencer and Loara senior guard JoJo Trinidad.

Named to the first team from Ocean View was junior center Conor Clifford. Seahawks junior guard Cristian Rivera and sophomore guard Josh Mishler were named to the second team.

Ocean View placed six players on the all-league girls’ team. Both senior guard Kelli Berry and junior point guard Hannah Ferguson were first-team selections, senior guard Francis Oda was second-team and sophomore guard Mari Shigemasa and freshmen post players Courtney and Grace Okwudibonye were honorable mention.

Brethren Christian was well represented on the 2011 Academy League boys’ and girls’ basketball teams.

The Warriors on the first team were senior guards Daniel Healy and Riley Thomas. Senior post Bobby Frisch made second team and senior forward/guard Zachary Luce and sophomore forward/guard Dakota Warren were named honorable mention.

Brethren Christian girls’ basketball Coach Jeff Wallace said Tuesday that the All-Academy League selections won’t be revealed to his squad until the team holds its 2010-11 season banquet in April.
