CERRITOS — The Lightning opened Academy League play Tuesday with a big win over the defending champion.

Alex Manolakas and Kevin Marshack swept at No. 1 doubles for Sage Hill (4-3, 1-0 in league). Sean Batten and Eric Magliarditi won two of three doubles sets, and Nasier Emtiaz and Garrett Rapport also took a set.

Andrew Kurzweil won two of three singles sets and Denis Cirit also won a set.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division III poll, plays host to Horace Mann School of Riverdale, New York, on Friday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

Costa Mesa 16, Godinez 2

SANTA ANA — Alex Adams (No. 1), Justin Dang (No. 2) and Michael Chantos (No. 3) each swept in singles for the Mustangs in an Orange Coast League opener Tuesday.

Tam Le and Benny Quinonez swept at No. 1 doubles for Costa Mesa (2-1, 1-0 in league).

The Mustangs play host to Crean Lutheran South today at 3:15 p.m.

Corona del Mar 14, Northwood 4

CORONA DEL MAR — Sea Kings senior Shane Korber improved to 20-0 in singles after sweeping, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, in a Pacific Coast League opener Tuesday.

Paul Kacik and Ismaen Aboubakare teamed up for the first time and also swept, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, for CdM (7-1, 1-0 in league).

The Sea Kings play at Irvine Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor 11, Mira Costa 7

NEWPORT BEACH — Jason Cernius swept at No. 1 singles for the Sailors in the nonleague match Tuesday.

Craig McKennon and Troy Arnold swept at No. 1 doubles, while Greg Brostek and Fred Matz swept at No. 3 doubles for Newport Harbor (4-4).

The Sailors play host to Woodbridge today at 3 p.m.

Sage Hill 6, Windward 5

NEWPORT COAST — Freshman Colby Bock singled to drive in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for the Lightning in the nonleague game Tuesday.

Senior Jack Heffreon, who pitched 6 2/3 innings, had a double, a single and two runs batted in. Junior Brandon Zelner had a double, a single and two RBIs and sophomore catcher Ryan Fishel threw three runners out for Sage Hill (4-4).

The Lightning return to Academy League Tuesday when they face rival St. Margaret’s at Sage Hill at 3:15 p.m.

IRVINE — Brent Lawson, Brian Ford and Will Morrow each went two for four for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Lawson had two runs batted in and two doubles, Morrow had two runs scored and Ford had one run scored.

Clark Cashion was one for three with two RBIs for CdM (7-2, 2-0 in league). Andrew McCormick pitched a complete game with five strikeouts to improve to 3-1. He allowed seven hits.

The Sea Kings play host to Woodbridge Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Corona del Mar def. Laguna Beach

LAGUNA BEACH — Brennan Anderson had 11 kills to help lead the Sea Kings to a 25-18, 26-24, 25-17 nonleague victory Tuesday.

Spencer Haly had nine kills and Nick Curci recorded 34 assists for CdM (10-2).

The Sea Kings play host to Edison Friday at 6 p.m.

NEWPORT COAST — Chris Zadra had 12 kills for the Lightning in the nonleague match that the Warriors won, 25-17, 25-22, 28-26, Tuesday.

Kent Kawaguchi had five digs and three aces for Sage Hill (3-7), which plays today at Saddleback Valley Christian at 5 p.m.

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior John Davenport shot three-under-par 32 with three birdies and no bogeys to earn medalist honors for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club Tuesday.

Junior Mike Moorhead shot 36, junior Brian Mull carded 39, and freshman Karick Brown (40) and sophomore Chase Wheatley (41) also scored for CdM (7-1, 2-0 in league).

The Sea Kings compete in a three-way match against Edison and San Clemente today at Newport Beach Country Club at 2 p.m.

ALISO VIEJO — Junior Jake Knapp shot one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Courtland Lee shot (40), Aaron Wood (41), Jake Stone (43) and Bill Crosson (46) also scored for Estancia (7-0, 5-0 in league).

The Eagles play against Ocean View today at Mile Square Golf Club.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 19, Century 9

COSTA MESA — Claire Woodside went two for three and was one of three players to have two hits for the Eagles who produced a nonleague mercy win Tuesday.

Woodside, a pitcher, allowed just two hits in three innings and struck out two.

Alexis Paul went two for two and catcher Kalina Urquiza was two for three for Estancia (2-8).

The Eagles play host to Los Amigos March 30 at 3:15 p.m.
