IRVINE — The host Anteaters completed a sweep of the Big West Conference-opening series with the Matadors on Sunday.
UCI (18-6, 3-0 in conference), ranked No. 16 in the USA Today/ESPN poll on Monday, is tied for first with Cal State Fullerton. The ‘Eaters, who have won four straight, visit San Diego today, before beginning a three-game conference series at Fullerton on Friday.
Senior third baseman Brian Hernandez went three for five with one run batted in to pace UCI’s nine-hit attack. He also got the final out for his sixth save.
Sophomore Kyle Hooper struck out five in 52/3 innings of relief to get the win.
Vanguard 2, Biola 1
COSTA MESA — Gabriel Garcia allowed one run in eight innings and Robert Purpura got the save for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Monday.
Jacob Domingos and Jerry Pena were both two for four with one run batted in for the winners (15-17, 11-11 in conference).

San Diego Crew Classic
MISSION BAY — The Orange Coast College varsity eight won, completing the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 20.1 seconds on Sunday.
The OCC boat included Jasmine Naea, Lena Hedayat, Regina Karckys, Vanessa Tyson, JonPenn Blandi, Rachelle Schelhaas, Alexis High, Lindsey Hitomi and coxswain Paige Walker.
The same unit won the Berg Cup, contested March 26 in Newport Harbor.
OCC was second in the novice eight race and third in the varsity four March 26.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High product Kate Baldoni had 11 saves for the top-ranked, visiting Cardinal, who improved to 20-0 on Sunday.
No. 13-ranked UCI is 14-8.
