High School Roundup: Andrews finishes third at Arcadia
Newport Harbor High senior Ryan Andrews finished third in the invitational boys’ shot put event at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational on Saturday night at Arcadia High.
Andrews upped his personal best of a 59 feet 5 1/2 with a 59-8 effort at Arcadia, finished just behind Jesuit’s Steven Boals (59-9) for second. Dos Pueblos’ Nicholas Scarvelis was first with an impressive 64-1 3/4.
Andrews’ teammates JB Salem and Steve Michaelsen came in ninth and 13th, respectively in the event. Salem’s mark was 55-0 1/4 and Michaelsen’s best Saturday was 54-2 3/4.
Newport Harbor High’s Ethan Cochran also competed in the invitational boys’ discus event, finishing fifth with a throw of 181-8. Michaelsen also competed in the event, but didn’t record a throw.
In the invitational boys’ pole vault, Newport Harbor’s Mark Sakioka finished tied for fifth with a mark of 15-7. In the invitational girls’ pole vault, Sailor Allison Krugman was 10th in 11-1.
Corona del Mar’s boys’ distance medley relay team rounded out the locals competing in invitational events at the Arcadia Invitational. The quartet of Alex Turney, Kyle Iverson, Ryan Rodrigues and Blake Myers came in 17th in 10 minutes 32.28 seconds.

Irvine Distance Carnival
IRVINE — Newport Harbor High sophomore Paige Tennison won the girls’ invitational 3,200 meters at the meet Saturday at Irvine High.
Tennison finished in 11 minutes 7.75 seconds, which was a personal-best by 15 seconds. She also finished seventh in the girls’ invitational 1,600 in 5:15.27, which was a PR by two seconds.
Newport’s Katelyn Mead was third in the girls’ frosh/soph 3,200 in 12:06.58.
