Little League: Twins start out strong, finish with 5-0 shutout

The Twins scored four runs in the bottom of the first and used that strong start to score an eventual, 5-0 shutout win over the Giants in Fountain Valley Little League Minor A Division action.

Nathan Young brought in the first run on a single, Riley Hanson hit a two-run home run and Steven Gonzalez singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Hanson also singled in the third and scored on Shane McCarthy’s ground out.

Young, Hanson, Gonzalez and Nick Taylor had two hits each. Taylor also allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings to get the pitching win. Young closed and allowed one hit.

Azeal Peralta led the Giants with two hits and one stolen base. Drake Sueda, starting pitcher for the Giants, had a single and walk.

Twins 4, Westminster Angels 3: In a game that pitted teams that won their first half in their respective leagues, Nathan Young’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning scored Nick Taylor with the winning run, as the Twins edged the Angels. Young delivered a one-out double and took third on a passed ball before Young’s fly out.

Both teams scored three times in the third inning. The Twins got their runs when Taylor scored on a wild pitch, Steven Gonzalez’s ground out brought in Young and Brian Allen walked and scored on a double by Shane McCarthy.

Riley Hanson was dominating on the mound and picked up his sixth win allowing no earned runs while scattering six hits with no walks and striking out 11. Over the final three innings, Hanson faced struck out seven of the 10 hitters he faced.

Ocean View Little League

Bats 11, River Bandits 4: Dominic Ventimiglia, Cole DiMarco and Will Macy combined for 10 hits and seven RBIs to help lead the Bats past the River Bandits.

The Bats scored had five runs in the fifth inning behind an RBI single by Macy, two-run double by DiMarco and RBI single by Jetty Peterson. The Bats took a 1-0 lead in the first when Macy opened with a single and scored on a single by DiMarco.

Minor B Division

Mets 13, Naturals 11: Two great teams went head-to-head Saturday for a truly exciting game that the Mets won in the last inning. Grady Carter, Danny Gallardo and Arron Marchbanks each had RBIs and Kai Nakamura a big hit, in the Mets’ final at-bat.

Nicholas Skorheim started on the mound for the Mets and struck out two in the first inning. Reliever Lucas Pantel threw 2 1/2 innings and struck out six and closer Tristan Kennedy struck out three.

The Naturals had a six-run lead but a single by Carter started a rally for the Mets in the fourth inning that saw Edison Chiu and Pantel both record RBIs to narrow the Naturals’ lead to 9-8. The Naturals came back for two more runs in the top of the fifth to pull out to an 11-8 advantage.

Riverdogs vs. Raptors: Strong pitching by Jack Rockefeller and Owen Sideris led the Raptors against the Riverdogs. Both struck out two players. Solid hitting by the Raptors was led by Quinn Ortiz and Jaden Moore, who both doubled.

Blue Claws vs. Raptors: Dominant pitching by both teams kept bats silent for most of the game. Left-hander James Kent of the Raptors made an impressive pitching debut, and Riley Bradley threw two strong innings for the Raptors and Owen Sideris caught a pop fly on defense.

Sun Devils vs. Titans: Parker Brooks made two great plays in the field and Dru Guerra and Nicholas Quach had several, booming hits for the Titans. For the Sun Devils, Kaden Chase made a great catch, teammate Kyle Palmer might have made the play of the year with a running shoestring grab that left fans of both teams buzzing and Roman Cianca was the hero at the plate with several, long doubles.

Sun Devils vs. Hurricanes: For the Hurricanes, Ezra Treskes caught the eye with great play in the field and at the plate. For the Sun Devils, Kyle Palmer sent several long drives to the outfield wall, Kaden Chase added a long double to right field and Jaylene Duarte, Nicholas Flum and Jack Feria each contributed as well. Both teams hit the ball very well all day.
