High School Roundup: Eagles sweep Mustangs
COSTA MESA — The Estancia High baseball team completed a sweep against rival Costa Mesa after a 10-3 Orange Coast League win Thursday.
The Eagles (13-12, 8-7 in league) out-hit the Mustangs, 13-5. Estancia finished third in league and will await their placement in the playoffs when pairings are announced Monday. Costa Mesa (10-15, 5-10 in league) was elminated from postseason consideration after losing to Estancia, 8-6, Tuesday.
Brodie Pearce was one of the leading hitters for Estancia, as he went two for three with a run batted in. Other Eagles who contributed were Sho Watanabe (two for four with an RBI), Andres Hernandez (two for thee with an RBI), Tyler Rios (one for three with three RBIs), Alex Trancoso (one for three with two RBIs) and Steven Macias (one for three).
Estancia pitcher Tyler De la Pena struck out six, walked two and gave up five hits in 52/3 innings.
“I can see that the boys get into it and they have fun with it,” Eagles Coach Matt Sorensen said of the rivalry. “It’s a nice, healthy rivalry.”

DIVING
Lubowe takes third
RIVERSIDE — Sage Hill School sophomore Harry Lubowe finished third at the CIF Southern Section Division III finals at Riverside City College Wednesday.
Lubowe scored 441.20 points. St.Anthony’s Nykola Bodnar won with 463.05 points and David Bunn of Maranatha of Pasadena was second with 451.30 points.

BASEBALL
Corona del Mar 5, Beckman 1
IRVINE — Brian Ford went three for four with a double for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League finale Thursday.
CdM (13-11, 7-8 in league) finished tied for fourth in league with University. The top three teams in the PCL are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Emme said the league’s fourth place team can get in with an overall record above .500. University also has an overall record above .500, plus the Trojan won the season series against the Sea Kings.
Emme said he’ll find out about a possible at-large bid Friday.
“If they go to the tiebreaker, we are done,” Emme said of what could be the deciding factor between the Sea Kings and Trojans.
CdM finished with nine hits against the PCL champion. Aaron White was two for four.
Andrew McCormack was two for four with two runs batted in. He also pitched six innings. He struck out five and allowed four hits. Sam Cubeiro earned the save.
Josh Harrison was one for three with two RBIs, while Will Morrow went one for three with an RBI for CdM.

Newport Harbor 5, Huntington Beach 4

NEWPORT BEACH – Jordan Desguin scored the game-winning run in a close play at the plate for the Sailors in the Sunset League finale Thursday.
Desguin opened the bottom of the eighth by reaching after he was hit by a pitch. Steve Guerin followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved the runners a base. Then Max Gerard was intentionally walked.
Austin Metzger, who bats leadoff, then sent a high chopper toward third base. Desguin sprinted home and scored just as the catcher came off home base to make the catch, Newport Harbor Coach Patrick Murphy said.
The Sailors (9-16-1, 2-12-1 in league) finished with 10 hits.
Gerard, who earned the win Tuesday with three innings, pitched seven innings. He struck out seven and gave up one earned run.
Matt Carpenter went two for two with a home run and a double. Max Goldstein had two hits, including a big, two-out RBI single in the fifth inning.
His single scored Carpenter, making it, 4-4. Pitcher Chase Kapana earned the win.

SOFTBALL
Costa Mesa 15, Estancia 4
COSTA MESA — Itzel Flores went two for two with a double for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast league finale Thursday.
Tamy Cerrato was one for four with a triple, while Nikki Lether went one for two with a double for Costa Mesa (8-17, 6-4 in league), which finished third in league.
The Mustangs will await CIF playoff pairings announced Monday.
