Three Lagunans excel in equestrian
A trio of Laguna Beach students put their equestrian talents on display at the Orange Coast Coolers Show at Sycamore Trails in San Juan Capistrano. Makenna Grierson, Nina Thornton and Paige Toro competed at the event that ran Sept. 24-26. Each rider qualified for the 28th annual Championship Horse Show, which is later this month.
Grierson took first place in an Equitation Medal class, Thornton won a blue ribbon in the Horsemanship Medal class and Toro qualified for Long Stirrup Hunters. The trio will meet up again at the Orange County Horse Show Assn. Championship Show, which is Oct. 19-23 at Oaks Blenheim Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano.

Boys & Girls Club hoops registration open
In-house registration and player evaluations are under way for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach Boys’ Basketball League at the club’s main branch, 1085 Laguna Canyon Road. Evaluations run through Oct. 14 and practices start Oct. 31. The season officially starts Dec. 6. All participants must be members of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.
Club membership for youth ages 6-18 is $150 per year. The Boys & Girls Club Basketball League fee is $100 per player and includes a uniform. A $25 late fee will apply to registrations received after Sept. 30. Annual League sponsorship opportunities are available for $500 and include a personalized banner hung in the club’s gymnasium. Breakers softball fundraiser is Oct. 16
The Laguna Beach High girls’ softball program will hold a fundraising dinner Oct. 16 at Lumberyard Restaurant, 384 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach. The event is between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. Patrons who mention that they are there to support the softball program will have 20% of their bill donated to the program.
Laguna players will be working the restaurant between 5 and 9 p.m. A silent auction will be held and prizes offered. Reservations are recommended. For reservation information, call (949) 715-3900.
