CdM girls take second
The Corona del Mar High girls’ water polo team finished second in the Foothill Fall Fling last weekend.
In a tournament that promised to be a preview of the upcoming CIF season in Division I, the Sea Kings advanced to the championship game before falling to Foothill, 6-5, on a goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
CdM had previously beaten Foothill, 11-10, in the championship game of the California High School State tournament in July.
On the first day of the tournament, CdM defeated Los Osos, Santa Margarita and Agoura to top the bracket play.
On the final day of the tournament, CdM defeated Newport, 9-6, in the quarterfinals and Laguna Beach, 10-5, in the semifinals to reach the championship game.
CdM took a 3-1 lead in the first period. Foothill stormed back for a 4-3 lead in the third. CdM recaptured the lead, 5-4, in the fourth period before Foothill scored on a penalty shot in the waning moments to win the game, 6-5.
CdM was led by seniors Pippa Saunders, Diana Murphy, Victoria Pierotti and Alex Musselman and juniors Cassidy Papa, Ally McCormick, Morgan Stewart, Caitlin Brandenberger, Gen Weed and Erica Weed. Also contributing to victories throughout the weekend were sophomores Annie Mortimer, Avery Warwick, Bobbi Hoose, Marina Coskinas and Kampbell Gritsch and freshman Eliza Britt.
