Oilers knock Vikings out of first place

The Huntington Beach boys’ soccer team posted a pair of second-half goals Friday to knock off visiting Marina, 2-0. The loss was the first in six Sunset League games for the Vikings, who fell to 4-1-1 and out of first place. Yobany Garcia and Keith Fronk scored goals and Jairo Rosales and James Mossembekker each had an assist for the Oilers (1-5), who won for the first time in league and avenged a 3-0 loss to Marina on Jan. 4.

Fountain Valley took over the top spot in the Sunset standings after picking up a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Newport Harbor on Friday. The Barons (5-1 in league, 14-4-2 overall) came away with the win when striker Wade Sias scored in the second 10-minute overtime period. Goalie Ryan Brown earlier made a key stop when he pushed a shot by the Sailors up and over the goal. Brown and Joey Loranger combined in goal for the shutout.

Edison and Los Alamitos played to a 1-1 tie Friday. Trevor Verone scored and Mikey McClymonds had an assist for the Chargers, who notched their first league win to improved to 1-4-1.

Friday’s Sunset League schedule has Huntington Beach at Fountain Valley at 3 p.m., Marina playing Los Alamitos at 3 p.m. at Laurel School and Edison playing at Newport Harbor at 4:45 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

The Edison took a big step toward repeating as Sunset League champion Monday by picking up a 1-0 victory over visiting Newport Harbor.

Junior forward Kelsey Wetzstein came off the bench to score the winning goal in the scoring half, scoring off a cross by Audri Minar.

The win by the Chargers kept them in first place in the league standings. They improved to 4-1-1 in league and 12-5-3 overall. Newport Harbor, which entered the game tied for first with Edison and Los Alamitos, slipped to 3-2-1 in league.

Los Alamitos (3-1-1) and Marina (2-3) were scheduled to play Monday, but the game was rained out.

Fountain Valley got its first victory in Sunset League play Monday by rallying in the second half for a 5-2 overtime victory over Huntington Beach.

The Oilers (2-3-1) were in charge at the half, holding a 2-0 lead. In the second half, Fountain Valley’s Madison Gomez scored a goal on a header off a cross from Valerie Holler. Gomez later scored her second goal off a pass from Dakota Griggs to tie the score.

Neither team could score in the first overtime but the Barons came up big in the second OT to get the win. Griggs scored all three goals in OT, two off passes from Gomez and one off a pass from Addie Espinoza.

Ocean View stayed atop the Golden West League standings after blanking Santa Ana, 3-0, on Jan. 19. Senior midfielder Kelley Dooley, junior midfielder Yoatzy Fuentes and senior midfielder Aleanna Vargas scored goals. Vargas, junior midfielder Danny Dapello and freshman forward Jade Kratovil each had an assist and freshman goalie Malia Hayes had 12 saves.

Girls’ Water Polo

In Sunset League play Jan. 18 at Newport Harbor High, Edison knocked off Huntington Beach, 17-4, Fountain Valley downed Marina, 13-6, and in a battle for first place, Newport Harbor beat Los Alamitos, 9-7.

In Edison’s win over Huntington, the Chargers turned a 2-0 first-quarter lead into a 10-0 halftime lead. Alys Williams led the Chargers with six goals and also had three steals and two assists. Melissa Balding scored four goals and Abby Oshiro had two goals, five assists and six steals.

Kayla Robert scorched the nets for nine goals and also collected two assists in Fountain Valley’s win over Marina. Merri Lightbody tallied three goals, four assists and two steals and Jen Lightbody had a goal with five steals and three assists for the Barons.
