Barons open with Cypress tourney crown
Fountain Valley wrapped up a successful first week to the 2012 softball season by winning the Cypress Tournament.
The Barons took the tournament title Saturday by shutting out La Mirada, 2-0. The Matadores took runner-up honors in CIF Southern Section Division II last year.
Emily Brucelas had a hit and run batted in, Cerissa Rivera and Kelli Tatum both had a hit and scored a run and Madi Perez and Mercedes Brito also had a hit. Rivera improved to 4-0 after striking out eight.
The Barons, who are 5-0, start play Thursday at the Bullhead City Tournament of Champions.

Huntington Beach
The Oilers won their first two games at the Costa Mesa Tournament on Saturday by defeating University, 4-1, and JSerra, 4-0. In the win over University, freshman Maria Steadmon won her first game as the Oilers improved to 3-0.

Marina
The Vikings, who started the season ranked fifth in Division 1, defeated 10th-ranked Rosary, 5-4, to start the season. They also beat Beckman, 7-3, on Monday and routed Santa Margarita, 9-0. Tera Blanco hit a solo home run in the first inning and Sydnee Cable clubbed a grand slam in the third in the win over Santa Margarita.
Blanco has earned all three wins in the pitcher’s circle and offensively, she has been walked in seven of 11 plate appearances.

Ocean View
The Seahawks fell Tuesday to Yorba Linda, 1-0, in nonleague play.
Ocean View, which entered the season ranked fifth in Division 4, had launched its season with two big wins on Saturday at the Costa Mesa Tournament. The Seahawks opened with a 10-1 drilling of Corona del Mar, then went on to score a 12-0 win over La Quinta/Westminster.
