Newport-Mesa wins national tournament
The Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball third-grade All-Star boys’ team completed its perfect season by winning the NJB national tournament last weekend in Hanford.
The Newport-Mesa All-Stars defeated all-stars from Anaheim Hills, 51-23, in the title game.
The team had qualified for the national tournament by winning its sectional tournament two weeks ago.
The team featured: Luke Barnes, Vanis Buckholz, Rees Clasen, Adam Garza, Tommy Griffin, Asher Hamilton, Tyler Li, Eli Liechty, Hunter Schimmelpfennig and Mike Wein.
The team was coached by Joe Schimmelpfennig and Jeff Hamilton.
