Briefs: UCI finishes fourth in Big West Commissioner’s Cup standings

UC Irvine finished fourth in the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for overall athletic success.

The Anteaters amassed 1,500 points in 15 sports for an average of 100 points. UCI was fourth in fall sports points (a 110 average), fifth in winter sports (95) and fourth in spring sports (95).

The ‘Eaters won conference titles in men’s and women’s soccer and women’s water polo.

Long Beach State won the award for the second straight school year, posting a record overall average of 140 points in 14 sports.

The 49ers topped the conference in fall and spring sports and were second to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in winter sports.

UC Davis finished second overall (115.6 overall average) and UC Santa Barbara was third (115.3).

UC Irvine has never won the award in its 14-year history.

UCSB has eight Commissioner’s Cup victories, while Long Beach State has four and Pacific has two.

OCC third in state

Orange Coast College ranked third in the California Community College Athletic Assn. standings for overall athletic success during the 2011-12 school year.

The Pirates’ adjusted total of 158 points finished behind Fresno City (169.5) and Mt. San Antonio (160.5) among 80 schools that registered points.

Points were awarded based on post-conference competition.

The Pirates won the men’s swimming state crown and also received top-five points in women’s cross country, men’s swimming, baseball, men’s volleyball and men’s cross country.

Orange Coast will be recognized at the National Allicance of Two-Year Collegiate Athletic Administrators awards luncheon in Dallas in June.

Bergmanova All-American

Vanguard University senior Gabriela Bergmanova was named first-team NAIA All-American in women’s tennis.

The NAIA West Senior Women’s Player of the Year, she finished 23-1 in singles and 16-9 in doubles in 2012. She was named All-Golden State Athletic Conference as well.

She was also named an NAIA scholar-athlete with a 3.78 grade-point average.

Bergmanova helped lead the No. 15-ranked Lions to the second round of the NAIA Championships in Mobile, Ala.

She was a first-team All-American as a junior and was first-team All-GSAC as a junior and a sophomore.
