Briefs: McBean nets winner

Former CdM standout leads LA Galaxy to Reserve League win over Vancouver Whitecaps.

Former Corona del Mar High standout Jack McBean scored in the 86th minute to help the LA Galaxy earn a 3-1 Reserve League victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at the University of British Columbia on Tuesday.

McBean came off the bench to tally the game-winner to help Los Angeles win its second straight and move into a first-place tie with the Whitecaps in the Reserve League standings.

McBean headed in Kyle Nakazawa free kick to break a 1-1 deadlock. It was McBean’s first goal of the season.

The Galaxy return to Reserve League play July 10 when they meet Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center.

OCC’s Brennan signs

Brandon Brennan, who earned all-state and All-Orange Empire Conference honors as a freshman pitcher at Orange Coast College in 2012, has signed Monday with the Chicago White Sox, who selected him in the fourth round (No. 141) overall in last week’s Major League First-Year Player Draft.

Brennan, who began his college career at the University of Oregon, went 11-1 with a 1.25 earned-run average to help OCC win the Orange Empire Conference and reach the four-team California Community College Athletic Assn. championship.

His fourth-round selection marked a quantum leap from his senior year at Capistrano Valley High, after which he was taken in the 40th round (No. 1,220) by the Colorado Rockies in 2010.

Brennan, a first-team all-state and All-Orange Empire Conference performer, said his transition from thrower (reaching 94 mph with his fastball) to pitcher helped him move up 1,079 spots in the draft in just two years.

Brennan, who had signed a letter of intent with Houston, said before the draft that he was anxious to sign and begin a professional career.

Brennan struck out 72, allowed 76 hits and walked 23 in 108 1/3 innings for OCC. He worked into the 11th inning in the Pirates’ eventual state tournament elimination loss to Rio Hondo, during which he extended a scoreless innings streak to 23. In his five starts previous to that, he was 5-0 and allowed just two earned runs in 36 innings.

Brennan’s 1.25 ERA ranked fourth in single-season OCC annals.

Brennan joins UC Irvine junior pitcher Mark Trentacosta (34th round by the St. Louis Cardinals), former UCI slugger Jordan Leyland (ninth round by the Toronto Blue Jays) and UCI signee Kevin Grendell (11th round by the Orioles) as area draftees who have signed professional contracts.

Bergman singled out

Former UC Irvine baseball pitcher Christian Bergman has been named to the California League All-Star team.

Bergman, who played at UCI from 2007 to 2010, is 8-4 with a 3.08 earned-run average in 13 games, all starts, for the Modesto Nuts, a Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

Bergman has won his last four starts, during which he has a 2.49 ERA in 25 1/3 innings. For the season, he has allowed 72 hits in 79 innings, with 61 strikeouts and 18 walks. He allowed just one earned run in six starts this season.

Bergman and the California League All-Stars will compete against the Carolina League All-Stars in a game, Tuesday at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Bergman, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander, was a three-time All-Big West Conference performer at UCI, when he helped the Anteaters reach the 2007 College World Series and make three additional trips to the NCAA postseason, including the 2008 Super Regional at LSU.

Bergman a Postseason All-Star in the Northwest League in 2011, was named California League Pitcher of the Week on April 23.

Locals recognized

Former UC Irvine men’s volleyball coach John Speraw and three Anteaters players earned top postseason honors awarded by Volleyball Magazine.

Speraw, who guided UCI to the program’s third NCAA championship before leaving to become head coach at UCLA, was named national co-coach of the year, sharing the laurel with USC’s Bill Ferguson.

UCI senior opposite Carson Clark and junior outside hitter Kevin Tillie were first-team All-American choices, while senior middle blocker Dan McDonnell represented UCI on the All-American third team.

In addition, UCLA senior setter Kyle Caldwell, a Newport Harbor High product, was a first-team honoree, while UCLA senior middle blocker Weston Dunlap, who also graduated from Newport Harbor, was a second-team honoree.

Tillie is among 14 players vying for 12 spots on the French Olympic team that will compete in London in August.

Goodenbour to CSDH

Molly Goodenbour, who was fired in March after four seasons as UC Irvine women’s basketball coach, has been named coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Goodenbour, 44-76 at UCI, returns to the NCAA Division II ranks, where she guided Chico State to a 52-11 record in two seasons prior to coming to Irvine.

Lions add recruits

Vanguard University men’s basketball coach Rhett Soliday announced the addition of four recruits recently, including a pair of heralded guards from Community Colleges of Spokane.

Preston Wynne (6-foot-1) and DeAngelo Jones (6-3) helped lead Spokane to a 46-14 record in two seasons, including a third-place finish in the Northwest Athletic Assn. of Community Colleges Final Four in 2010-11 and an East Region title in 2011-12.

Wynne, who averaged 27 points per game as a senior at Wellpinit High to earn all-state honors, set single-season (702 for a 23 per-game average) and career scoring records (1,228) for points at Spokane, where he was the NWAACC East Region MVP as well as Defensive Player of the Year.

He also holds Spokane records for points (44) and three-pointers (11) in one game.

“Everyone who sees him play knows he can really score,” Soliday said in a statement. “But the other parts of his game make him so good. He is smart, unselfish, an excellent defender and he plays as hard as anyone.”

Jones was averaging 16 points, four rebounds and two steals per game as a sophomore in 2011-12, when he sustained a season-ending injury in December. He averaged 10 points and shot 55% from three-point range as a freshman, after averaging 19.8 points and seven rebounds per contest as a senior at Cheney High in Washington.

Chris Gorman, another community college transfer from Palomar in San Marcos, is a 5-10 guard who will have three years of eligibility at Vanguard. As a freshman at Palomar, he averaged 21 points and 4.2 assists to rank No. 6 in the state in scoring.

He was Palomar’s MVP and a first-team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference performer.

Gorman was an All-CIF honoree at El Camino High in San Diego County, where he averaged 18 points and five assists per game as a senior.

Logan Fougnies is a 6-0 guard out of Gilbert Christian High in Arizona, where he helped the Knights win a pair of state small-school titles and compile a three-year record of 84-8. He averaged 10.5 points and 3.8 assists per game as a senior last season and scored 27 points in an Arizona All-Star game in May.

The quartet joins Sean McCarthy, a senior at Idaho Falls High in Idaho, who signed with Vanguard in November.

The Lions finished 15-15, 7-11 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, last season.

Chin closes strong

Former UC Irvine golfer John Chin finished 25th in the Nationwide Tour’s Mexico Open, completed Sunday (June 10) at the El Bosque Golf Club.

Chin shot three-under-par 69 in the final round to finish with a 72-hole total of four-under 284 and earn $5,125. It was his second top-25 finish in the last three weeks. He was 22nd at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in late May.

Sean Shahi, another Anteater alum, missed the cut after shooting 74-73 in the first two rounds.
