Olympics Roundup: CdM’s Anae aims for gold
Corona del Mar High graduate Tumua Anae will attempt to become the third local athlete to win a gold medal at the London Olympics on Thursday.
Anae, a backup goalie on the U.S. women’s water polo team, will help the Americans battle Spain in the gold-medal game. The two teams, both 4-0-1 in the tournament, played to a 9-9 tie in group play.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The U.S, men’s volleyball team that won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, was eliminated in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, falling to Italy, 28-26, 25-20, 25-20.
Team USA, which finished 4-2 in the tournament, included former UC Irvine All-Americans David Smith and Brian Thornton and was coached by former Orange Coast College player Alan Knipe.

MEN’S WATER POLO
UC Irvine alum Ryan Bailey scored his 10th goal of the 2012 London Olympics, but the U.S. men’s water polo team fell to Croatia, 8-2, in a quarterfinal game Wednesday.
With the loss, the Americans, who earned a silver medal in Beijing in 2008, will face Spain in a fifth-place semifinal Friday.
Team USA also includes UCI products Jeff Powers and Tim Hutten, as well as Corona del Mar High graduate John Mann.
