College Roundup: Anteaters upset Tigers
IRVINE — The UC Irvine women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season Sunday, upsetting No. 21-ranked Auburn, 1-0, to improve to 1-3.
Junior Mady Solow converted an assist from junior Natalia Ledezma in the 79th minute for the only tally in a defensive-dominated affair in which Auburn (2-2) managed no shots on goal.
The Tigers equaled UCI’s five shots, as UCI sophomore goalie Jennifer Randazzo earned her first shutout of the season.
Ledezma found Solow open just outside the box and Solow hit a shot that glanced off the crossbar and into the cage for her first goal as an Anteater.
The win snapped a five-match winless streak for the ‘Eaters that dated back to last season.
UCI will now play nine straight road games before returning home for a Big West Conference game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Oct. 5.
It was the fourth ranked opponent UCI has beaten in the last three seasons.
Jordan Bruce, Jenna Pellegrino, Zoya Farzaneh and Rachel Wood also had shots for UCI, which has seen four players produce its four goals this season.
UCI appeared to score a goal in the 65th minute, when Solow appeared to bend a corner kick inside the far post. But the official ruled a UCI player had fouled Auburn goalkeeper Amy Howard on the play, and the game remained scoreless.
UCI returns to action Friday at Oregon.
