Fall is sweep season for Laguna Beach
Two matches into the 2012 season and the Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team hasn’t dropped a game.
Laguna upped its record to 2-0 Tuesday by sweeping visiting JSerra, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12 at Dugger Gym. Sophomore outside hitter Alyse Ford led the Laguna charge with 19 kills. Sophomore libero Francie Holte had 10 digs and senior setter Sevana Drovak 27 set assists.
The Breakers, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1-A, opened their season Aug. 30 and defeated swept Norco, 25-23, 25-9, 25-13. Ford and sophomore outside hitter Sabrina Stillwell had 22 and 14 kills, respectively, and Dvorak 37 assists.
“I thought we got a little better from match to match,” Laguna Coach Lance Stewart said. “Norco came in a little undermanned because they lost a couple of starters a week before the match. We came out a little jittery, nervous for that first match. I thought we played much better against JSerra.”
Laguna returns to action Saturday, hosting Santiago of Corona at 3:15 p.m. Next week, the Breakers host Newport Harbor at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“We have a couple of tough ones coming up,” Stewart said. “Santiago is a good volleyball team and has good, talented athletes.”

Girls’ Tennis
The Breakers opened the season with nonleague victories over Sage Hill and Mater Dei.
Laguna started its campaign Aug. 29 with a 10-8 win against Sage Hill at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach. The score was tied after the first round, where the Breakers picked up one point in singles play from No. 2 singles player Kira Hamilton, and two points in doubles after wins from the No. 2 team of Chloe Mansour and Katelyn Bo and No. 3 team of Stephanie Tat and Natasha Keces.
Laguna’s singles lineup came up big in Round 2 and received sweeps from No. 1 Brooke Michaels, Hamilton and No. 3 Ashley Shelton. The Breakers’ top doubles team of Dominique Willette and Bailey Jaeger won one set.
The Breakers came back a day later to knock off host Mater Dei, 10-8, on Aug. 30 at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley. Davis altered his lineup for the match, and Hamilton and Jaeger each won twice and Willette once in singles play. The No. 1 doubles team of Michaels and Shelton, and No. 2 of Mansour and Bo won two of three sets. The No. 3 team of Tat and Keces also picked up a point.
Laguna has two nonleague games on tap next week, starting with a 3 p.m. Tuesday match at Northwood. The Breakers host San Clemente at 3 p.m. Thursday.
