Briefs: Lions’ Davidson lauded in soccer

Vanguard University junior Jordan Davidson has been named Golden State Athletic Confernce and NAIA Offensive Player of the Week after posting four goals and an assist in two games last week.

Davidson, a forward, scored twice in a 4-0 win over No. 17-ranked Kansas Wesleyan on Sept. 3. She then had two goals and an assist in the Lions’ 6-0 trouncing of Soka on Friday.

The transfer from Paradise Valley Community College in Arizona has five goals in three games for the Lions (3-0), who are ranked No.16 in the latest NAIA poll.

Davidson leads the GSAC in points per game (3.67) and goals per game (1.67).

Vanguard, which has outscored its opponents, 12-0, returns to action on Thursday against Olivet Nazarene, to kick off a tournament at Lee University in Tennessee.

Anteater recognized

UC Irvine junior Gor Kirakosyan, who scored three goals in his first two matches, was named Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Kirakosyan, a transfer from Pasadena City College, scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Long Island University Brooklyn on Friday, despite having to sit out nearly all of the second half with a leg injury.

The injury kept him out of UCI’s victory Sunday over Detroit.

The No. 12-ranked Anteaters were 3-0 heading into Friday’s home game against Stanford. UCI travels to No. 7-ranked UCLA on Sunday.
