Defense paves the way for Oilers

The Huntington Beach Jr. Clinic Division Oilers earned their second victory of the season Saturday by dominating the South Bay Packers, 27-0, in Jr. All-American Football action.

Huntington received strong performances from several players as the Oilers ran their record to 2-1. Running backs Andy Rodriguez and Lyric Fata had big games for the Oilers, who improved to 2-1. Rodriguez rushed for 96 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run. Fata scores on touchdown runs of 65, 15 and eight yards.

Quarterback Ethan Rumney and running back Jonathan Brown came up with big plays on defense for the Oilers. Rumney recovered a fumble and onside kick and had two tackles. Born rushed for 46 yards, laid down a block that led to a touchdown and intercepted a pass.

Jr. Pee Wee Division

Fullerton 14, Huntington Beach 13: Fullerton scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final 20 seconds to knock off the Oilers on Saturday. Jetty Peterson and AJ Gatto rushed for touchdowns and two-way player Ethan Howard and defensive newcomer Josh Rosow turned in key plays for the Oilers.

Huntington takes on the Woodcrest Generals on Saturday.

Pop Warner Football

The Huntington Beach Jr. Pee Wee Division Green Chargers rolled to victory No. 4 on Saturday by defeating the Santa Ana Red Monarchs, 28-7. Cameron Eden threw touchdown passes to Nicholas Upstill and Jake Furlong, Tanner Nelson and Jack Horton combined to rush for 150 yards, and Sammy Rovano returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown.

The Green Chargers were led defensively by Cameron Mase, Trent Fletcher and Christian Prado.

Huntington (4-1) travels to Tesoro High on Saturday to take on the undefeated Santa Margarita Blue Titans at 3 p.m.

Jr. Midget Division

Huntington 24, San Clemente 0: The undefeated Green Chargers (5-0) racked up another shutout victory Saturday by handling the Black Tritons.

Huntington’s defense was challenged for the first time this season when San Clemente mounted an game-opening drive that eventually stalled at the Huntington 20-yard line. From there, the Green Chargers held the Black Tritons in check. The defense was led by strong performances from Dylan Alcantara, who had two interceptions, and linebackers Karson Ayres, Jack Carmichael and Zane Webster.

Daniel Serrano rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Griffin O’Connor threw a TD pass to Dave Atencio.

The Green Chargers travel next Saturday to San Juan Hills High to face the Santa Margarita Blue Titans (5-0) at 2 p.m. in a battle for first place.

Mighty Mite Division

Green Chargers 27, Anaheim 0: Huntington (4-1) bolted to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter Saturday and went on to shut out the Gold Rams at Brookhurst Park in Anaheim.

Connor Provost rushed for two touchdowns to start the scoring, Carson Chalabian rushed for a score and Jordan Ginnis and Phil Overturf scored on extra-point runs in the opening quarter. Dane Despars rushed for a touchdown and Provost scored the extra point in the third quarter to complete the scoring.

Saddleback Valley 19, Gold Chargers 0: Saddleback Valley used a halfback option pass and sweep to score touchdowns in the first half and the White Bears went on to defeat Huntington at Edison High on Saturday.

The Gold Chargers take on the Canyon Hills Red Hawks at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peralta Canyon Park in Anaheim.
