Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE — Junior Steven Melena placed second to lead UC Irvine to the team title on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Melena completed the 6,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 45.8 seconds to lead five Anteaters in the top nine.

Sophomore Alex Tebbe (fifth in 17:57.8), senior Nick Osborne (sixth in 18:00.1), senior Sam Hyams (eighth in 18:03.5) and Tommy Newton-Neal finished (ninth in 18:05.1), helped UCI post 30 points, 11 better than runner-up Wyoming.

Andrew Snyder was 12th in 18:17.0 and Amir Shirif was 15th in 18:27.1 for the Anteaters.

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Vanguard won the meet that featured 13 teams with 77 points at Fairview Park Saturday.

Tyler Dutchover and Cameron Barela led the way for the Lions scoring sixth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively.

Dutchover finished the 8K race in 25 minutes, 51.14 seconds, while Barela finished in 25:55.73.

Daniel Okabe scored a 10th-place finish in 26:11.61 for Vanguard.

Biola came in second with 89 points.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 2, Biola 1

LA MIRADA — Charlotte Wisniewski and Jordan Davidson scored a goal each for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Amanda Couch and Lindsey Kelly-Holman had an assist each for Vanguard (10-2-0, 6-0-0 in conference).

Goalie Lauren Terry made seven saves for the Lions.

Biola is 6-6-1, 3-3-0.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Riverside

RIVERSIDE — Aly Squires had 14 kills to lead the Anteaters to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 Big West Conference win Saturday.

Marissa Alvarez had 36 assists and 13 digs, while Shannon Fleming and Marisa Bubica added nine kills each for UCI (9-12, 4-4 in conference). Kristin Winkler led all players with 22 digs for the Anteaters.

The Highlanders are 5-15, 0-7.

UC Irvine 2, Cal State Fullerton 1

IRVINE — The Anteaters overcame a 1-0 deficit to earn their first Big West Conference win Saturday.

Pavle Atanackovic had a goal and an assist for UCI (4-9-1, 1-4-0 in conference). Enrique Cardenas also scored and Christopher had an assist for the Anteaters.

Fullerton is 4-10-1, 0-4-1.

Biola 4, Vanguard 1

LA MIRADA — Edgar Hernandez scored for the Lions to give them a 1-0 lead in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Kevin Cornwall provided the assist for Vanguard (5-6-3, 3-1-2 in conference).

Biola is 8-4-1, 4-2-0.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE — Senior Chloe Fata finished 14th to help UC Irvine finish fourth on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Fata completed the 4,000-meter course in 14 m minutes, 14.8 seconds.

Colleen Lillig (15th in 14:16.6), Kaycee Holcomb (19th in 14:31.3), Camille Maron (21st in 14:36.6) and Carlotta Pham 24th (14:45.7) also led the way for UCI.

The ‘Eaters’ 93 points was 66 behind victorious UC Riverside.

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Vanguard finished fifth out of 11 teams in the meet that Biola won at Fairview Park Saturday.

Megan Williams led the Lions with a 10th-place finish in the 5K race in 18 minutes, 21.35 seconds.

Bethany Nickless, running unattached, won the race in 17:29.99.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 10, UC Irvine 6

MALIBU — The No. 4-ranked Anteaters were surprised by the No. 8-ranked hosts in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on Saturday.

Mitch Wise had three goals to pace UCI (14-4, 0-1 in conference), which trailed, 7-2 at halftime.

Pepperdine is 8-5, 1-0.

UCI returns to MPSF play on Oct. 21 at UC Santa Barbara at UCI.
