High School Roundup: Newport-Mesa trio advances
LONG BEACH — Newport Harbor High freshman Grace Ferrell, Estancia senior Cassie Stevenson and Corona del Mar freshman Amy Matsuoka finished among the top 51 girls to extend their season after competing in the CIF Southern Section Southern Regional individual golf tournament Wednesday morning at Recreation Golf Course.
Ferrell, who finished tied for third in the Sunset League finals, shot a five-over-par 79, that included three birdies. Stevenson, who finished second in the Orange Coast League finals, carded an 81, and Matsuoka shot an 82, finishing third in the Pacific Coast League finals.

An earlier version incorrectly reported that Stevenson shot an 82. She shot 81.
Eighty-three was the cut at the tournament that featured 109 players.
Ferrell, Stevenson and Matsuoka will play in the CIF Southern Section Individual Final Championship and WSCGA Regional Qualifier Nov. 1 at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.
Estancia sophomore Naomi Beth also competed on Wednesday and ended her season after she shot 106.
Brea Olinda’s Amy Lee won with a 69, according to the Orange County Register.

BOYS’ WATER POLO
Newport Harbor 11, Huntington Beach 8
NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors clinched at least a share of the Sunset League title with the victory Wednesday night at Newport Harbor High.
Senior Curtis Fink scored four goals for Newport Harbor (17-3, 4-0 in league). Junior Mitchell Mendoza and senior Dan Stevens had two goals each.
Huntington Beach is 15-12, 3-1, and tied for second in league with Los Alamitos.
Senior keeper Wyatt Muller had nine saves for the Sailors, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.
Newport Harbor next travels north to play at the Bellarmine Memorial Cup tournament, beginning Friday in San Jose. Newport opens against Clovis West at 10:10 a.m. Friday.

COSTA MESA — Garrett Henscheid scored two goals for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Wednesday at Orange Coast College.
Henscheid, a goalie, also made 12 saves for Estancia.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Academy League finals
NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill senior captains Liana Korber, Kimberly Brown and Lauren Hsu swept the singles and doubles titles Wednesday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.
The top-seeded Korber won the singles title. She defeated No. 4-seeded Christie Kittlesen of Crean Lutheran, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals before topping No. 2-seeded Tessa Hurr of St. Margaret’s, 6-1, 6-0, in the championship match.
Brown and Hsu were No. 1-seeded in doubles and won the title. They defeated Oxford Academy’s Sarah Choung and Lydia Hwang, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals, then beat No. 2-seeded Grace Yao and Andrea Kim of Oxford, 6-4, 6-2, in the finals.
Korber, Brown and Hsu all qualify for the CIF Individual Championships, which begin Nov. 19.
Sage Hill’s Amira Tarsadia and Natalie Meltzer took fourth in doubles. They reached the semifinals before losing to Yao and Kim, 6-4, 6-3.
Sage Hill, which won the team league title as well for the first time since 2007, awaits the release of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 brackets on Monday.
The playoffs begin Oct. 31.
