High School Roundup: CdM rallies for title

Corona del Mar High senior Jack Harryman scored the game-winning goal with 54 seconds left, capping a wild rally as CdM boys’ water polo won the championship match of the Finis Memorial Cup over Long Beach Wilson, 11-10, on Saturday night at Bellarmine High in San Jose.

Harryman and Jake Wyatt each scored three goals for the Sea Kings, who trailed the Bruins, 8-3, at halftime.

“We went really, really aggressive,” CdM Coach Barry O’Dea said in a phone interview. “We went to a full press. I was sending guys early, almost the entire game. It put them on their heels a little bit.”

Danny Marshall scored twice for CdM (20-6) in the title match, and Matt Sherburne, Reid Chase (two assists) and Colby Watson scored one goal each. Wyatt had two asssts and two steals, and Kyle Trush led the team with three steals. Sherburne’s goal, a backhander from set, brought the Sea Kings within one, before they tied it on Marshall’s goal with 2:30 left.

Senior goalie Patrick McKenzie made 10 saves.

On the game-winning goal, O’Dea said Harryman took a cross pass and scored on a skip shot..

“This team has done so much over four years,” O’Dea said of his senior-laden squad. “We said at halftime, ‘This is your last big trip, let’s make it count.’ It was an all heart, all-out effort. I was so proud of them. Our guys are pretty good, now that they’re starting to click and put things together. We’re starting to hit on all cylinders right now.”

Earlier Saturday the Sea Kings defeated rival Newport Harbor, 11-6 in a semifinal match. Marshall had three goals, and Wyatt and Chase each scored twice. Harryman, Trush, Watson and Armen Mavusi added single goals.

McKenzie made eight saves in the semifinal win for CdM, which avenged a 9-7 loss to Newport last weekend in the Battle of the Bay match.

“We put Newport on their heels right from the get-go,” said O’Dea, whose team is ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Newport Harbor is ranked No. 3, and Wilson is No. 4.

O’Dea highlighted the play of his centers — Mavusi, Sherburne and Ty Hack — throughout the tournament.

Newport Harbor (19-5), the defending tournament champion, finished fourth. The Sailors lost to Miramonte, 11-8, in the third-place match.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor senior Paige Tennison won the race in 17 minutes, 20 seconds Saturday at Central Park.

Tennison’s finish led the Sailors to a fourth-place finish with 75 points. Erin Barth (7th, 18:22), Leah Van Dyke (19th, 19:06) and Maggie Godson (20th, 19:06) finished in the top 20 for Newport Harbor.

Marina won the meet with 51 points, followed by Fountain Valley (58 points) and Edison (59).

Tennison advances to the CIF Southern Section preliminaries Nov. 10 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High finished third after beating Torrey Pines, 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25, 15-8, Saturday at Santa Barbara High.

The Sea Kings (25-6) lost to Marymount in the semifinals, 21-25, 25-22, 24-22, 25-19. Archishop Mitty won the tournament with a five-set win over Marymount.

GOLETA — Newport Harbor won the consolation championship after beating Salinas, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19, Saturday at Dos Pueblos High.

Sierra Brown had 12 kills, Torey Thompson had 33 assists and eight kills and Hunter Jennings had 14 digs for the Sailors (19-9).

Newport defeated Long Beach Wilson, 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23, earlier in the day. Carolyn Bockrath had 22 kills, Brown added 10 kills, Jennings had 14 digs and Thompson amassed 43 assists.
