High School Roundup: CdM opens with shutout

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — The Sea Kings opened their season with a shutout Tuesday.

Senior Alec Adamson and sophomore Chaz Downing led the singles lineup with freshman Bjorn Hoffmann contributing nicely to round out the third singles spot. The doubles were anchored by the junior duo of Carson Williams and Josh Kliger.

CdM is on the road again Thursday at Laguna Beach.

Estancia 18, Tustin 0

COSTA MESA — Seniors Robert Morrone and Joseph Kidane each won 18 of 20 singles games for the Eagles in Tuesday’s nonleague match.

Estancia’s No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Sterling Gates and senior Kaimon Brust also swept, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.

Estancia (4-0) plays host to Garden Grove on Wednesday.

St. Margaret’s 10, Newport Harbor 8

SAN CLEMENTE — Sophomore Reese Stalder swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, for the Sailors in their season opener Tuesday at Rancho San Clemente Tennis Center.

Senior christian Lee won two of three at No. 2 singles, while juniors Sean Perrier and Garett Byers won two of three at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor, which will play in the Sage Hill Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Newport Harbor 188, Esperanza 225

YORBA LINDA — Max Meisenheimer shot one-under-par 35 to earn medalist honors for the Sailors in their season opener Tuesday at Black Gold Golf Club.

Landon Knight (37), Mason Moody (38), Brad Tapfer (38) and Reid Pfeiffer (40) also scored in the Newport Harbor win.

Estancia 195, Long Beach Milikan 232

COSTA MESA — Senior Jake Stone was medalist for the Eagles, firing a one-over par 37 in Tuesday’s nonleague season opener at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Bill Crosson (38), Aaron Wood (39), Courtland Lee (40) and Cody Nelson (41) also scored for Estancia, which plays Northwood on Wednesday at Oak Creek.

NEWPORT BEACH — Chase Wheatley was medalist for the Sea Kings with a one-under par 34 in their first dual match of the season Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Bryan Hong (35), John Hong (37), Karick Brown and Drew Hanson (both 38) also scored for CdM.

The Sea Kings also participated in the 20-team Ayala Tournament on Monday at Los Serranos, placing fourth. Brown led the varsity team, taking third place individually with an even-par 74.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Irvine def. Sage Hill

NEWPORT COAST — Senior Kent Kawaguchi finished with 16 kills for the Lightning in a season-opening match that Irvine won, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12, on Tuesday.

Cameron Hall nine kills for the Lightning.
