Youth Scene: ‘Mean Green’ champions

The Costa Mesa Mean Green Machine, a girls’ 10-and-under team, stunned South Irvine, 5-3, to win the Gold Division of the Costa Mesa Classic.

Emme Cirillo was named tournament MVP for her stellar defensive play and scoreless goalkeeping.

The tournament started on a sour note for the Mean Green Machine when they lost, 5-1, to South Irvine. They did however rebound to defeat a tough team from San Pedro, 5-0, on goals from Sophia De Marzo, Summer Richley, Daisey Hernadez, Emma Joyce and Vanessa Carrillo.

Next up was the undefeated in pool play team from West Los Angeles. After a scoreless first half the, Costa Mesa girls exploded with three goals in the third quarter one by De Marzo and two by Sasha Olmedo. The game finished 3-0.

Next up was the finals against the champions from South Irvine. The Mean Green Machine fell behind early, 1-0, but led, 3-1, at the half. South Irvine came roaring back in the third quarter and tied the score, 3-3. Tough defense from Lani Whitaker, Brianna Tapia and Cirillo as well as fearless goalkeeping by Frida Molina kept the score 3-3 through the fourth quarter and the game headed to overtime. In the first overtime session Olmedo scored her second goal of the day and broke the deadlock on a beautiful play assisted by Joyce, who finished off her hat trick as the final whistle blew.

All-Stars announced

Newport-Mesa NJB has announced the third-grade All-Star team for the 2013 season.

The team is: Will Purcell, Van Sidebotham, Luke O’Neil, Sanjay Tewari, Ryder Brooks, Jordan Stucki, Jack Bolt, Jason Plumb, Trent Liolios and Calder Overfelt.

The team is coached by Brent Overlfelt and Scott Liolios.

The team will compete in the Southern California All-Star Tournament March 16-17 and hopes to earn a spot in the National All-Star Tournament March 23-24 in Hanford.
