Softball Roundup: Ocean View begins with domination

Four games into the 2013 prep softball season, and the Ocean View Seahawks have yet to be scored upon.

Ocean View won its fourth shutout game out of the gate Tuesday by overpowering visiting Tustin in four innings, 10-0. Outstanding pitching punctuated the victory as Billi Derleth and Alyssa Slater combined on a one-hit, 10-strikeout performance.

“We played solid defense, and timely hitting from Billi [Derleth], Tobi Salzman and Brittany Hitchcock, contributed to the victory,” Ocean View Coach Mike McLaughlan said.

Ocean View hasn’t allowed a run in its first four games. During that span, Seahawks hitters amassed 38 runs and the pitching staff has yielded only three hits.

The Seahawks rolled to a 10-0 victory Saturday over JSerra at the Costa Mesa Tournament. The Seahawks were led offensively by Salzman with two triples and a single with two runs batted in, and Olivia Russ, who homered and had three RBIs. Hitchcock and Slater combined for a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.

Also at the tournament Saturday, Ocean View blanked Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, 2-0. Hitchcock pitched a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and was backed by a solid defense. Salzman and Cassie Baughman both had two hits.

Ocean View’s next game is at 1 p.m. Saturday against JSerra in the semifinals of the Costa Mesa Tournament.

Edison: The Chargers split their two games Saturday at the Best of the West Tournament. They started the season with a 5-3 loss to Temecula Great Oak, but came back to topple Corona, 11-0.

In the two games, Reis Birkett doubled twice and had three RBIs, Kiana Pancino went three for six with a double and four RBIs, Carissa Sherman went two for five with a double and RBI, Karley Wester went three for seven with an RBI, and pitcher Sammy Cordova threw a complete-game shutout against Corona.

“Although we didn’t start the way we wanted to, we definitely finished the way we planned,” first-year Edison Coach Kim Ensey said. “The best part was seeing the girls come together after a tough loss and strike for greatness. We had so many highlights but for me, it was great seeing some of our younger athletes step up and perform as if they were veterans. Freshman Kiana Pancino had a great day at the plate and sophomore Reis Birkett shined both at the plate and behind the plate. We definitely had more pluses than negatives.”

The Chargers return to action Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. nonleague game at La Palma Kennedy.

Fountain Valley: The Barons completed play Saturday at the Cypress Tournament and scored a 7-0 victory over Irvine.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers picked up their first victory of the young season Feb. 26 by routing host San Juan Hills, 14-2. The win triggered a four-game win streak that included follow-up wins over San Clemente (6-5), Paramount (7-6) and Gahr (4-3).

In the 14-2 win over San Juan Hills, Huntington took Stallions pitching for 18 hits led by senior Jill Martinez with four hits, freshman Anna Kufta, who homered twice among three hits, and senior Emily Stoner also had three hits. Micaela Vierra got her first win by striking out two while allowing just two hits.

In Huntington’s home opener Feb. 28, Sammie Vandiver had two key hits to ignite a comeback and Kufta and junior Jacqui Pascaul both had extra-base hits to drive in runs to key a 6-5 win over San Clemente. Oilers Coach Jeff Forsberg said Vierra was “brilliant in the circle,” with seven strikeouts including a two-out strikeout with the tying run stationed at second base in the top of the seventh inning.

The wins against Paramount (7-6) and Gahr (4-3) came Saturday at the Cypress Tournament. During the two-weekend tournament, which started Feb. 23, Kufta and Stoner hit home runs and Vierra registered both pitching wins.

Kufta has four home runs in six games, Vierra all four pitching wins, and Martinez is batting .600.

The Oilers, 4-2, return to action Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. Northwood Tournament game at Beckman.

“For the first time in years, we have the offense to support great pitching,” Forsberg said. “With four impact freshman in Kufta, Kristina Inouye, Alyssa Horeczko and Callie Saccacio in the lineup with our returners, we have a great mix in classes, experience and enthusiasm. Kufta and Inouye’s maturity solidify a solid bunch of girls and we are believing we can win and have a new identity.”

Marina: The Vikings started their season Saturday and recorded victories over San Clemente (5-3) and San Marcos (5-1) at the Foothill Tournament.
